Richard Rhodes’ The Making of the Atomic Bomb is a great book that kind of explains all that in detail…
but i would say it is either the Curie’s experiments, discovering the neutron, splitting the atom, Fermi’s reactor, or the tests during the Manhattan project; all really well documented.

well, with 2 trolleys it is the same amount of suffering as with 1

snowballing
yeah, it is not snowballing, it is Network Effect. for the people who want to use a twitter-like social network, the value is in the many other people using it.
but, as you are doing, telling people to leave is the correct move. because for every person that the network loses, the network loses value for everyone (the network effect going in reverse)

Giving people money to rise them out of poverty does but happiness
Greedily accumulating wealth after you have enough money for anything you could have ever needed doesn’t
- Comment on Is there any advantage to tying game logic to frame-rate? 5 months ago:
also, if a game relies in a complex physics engine, the physics simulations has to be done with a stable interval and FPS, which means it had to be decoupled from the rendering (which was not stable and depends on what you are drawing)

- Comment on Why do teeth don't regenerate? 6 months ago:
The diet that we evolved to consume (fruits, lean meats and fibrous plants) was much less damaging to our teeth than the current high-sugar, high-fat, highly processed foods. And human lifespans was shorter, so less time for teeth to damage. So there wasn’t a strong evolutionary need to regenerate them (unlike an animal like sharks)

RPS already has an article “celebrating Alices in games” as a sneaky attack on this.

the thing is, the one and only purpose of this dialog is to increase metrics of engagement, like how many users download the app. they don’t need to convert every mobile web user to an app user immediately. as long as that dialog is driving the engagement metrics apps, it is doing its work correctly. obviously at some point there will stop increasing engagement, so the middle managers will turn and try to squeeze a bit more by removing the loopholes, but it is not an urgent problem. it even might be intentional so they can squeeze a bit more later
the one that i am surprised at how bad it is is Twitter, that is still hosted at twitter.com . even going to x.com just redirects to twitter.com . i assume that there’s some major engineering problem that is preventing them from switching, but still, it has been almost 10 months and the clown at chief really pushed for the rebranding

- Comment on How comes despite modern medecine, (western) society is less violent ? 8 months ago:
Even if people were thinking “i want to just harm someone in a way that they can still make a full recovery”, modern medicine also tells us much more about ptsd and other mental health issues that can happen from violence. So even if the while premise of “let’s get violent, they can heal” was true, it would still lead to less violence
- Comment on [deleted] 1 year ago:
also, having the document was not the issue. it was the intentional hiding and lying about them when the gov went to recover them
- Comment on Uno reverse 🔁 1 year ago:
i’m going to stop calling it twitter when twitter.com redirects to x.com, and not the other way around
at that point i would stop talking about it, because X is just too stupid
