I successfully read one recently! I was watching sumo, and they show the wrestlers names first in kanji, than add the romaji later, and I saw that trident looking one at the end of a name and I thought -i know that one, that’s mountain, so could be -yama, or maybe -zan, at the end of the guy’s name, and tried to guess who was coming out next. Turned out it was Kinbozan, so i was right, but also meh.

I always assume anything written big, is also repeated in the smaller print, making the big writing safe to ignore, and therefore invisible. It works well about 0 times out of 10.

For one of the Dragon Warrior games on the venerable PS1 I choose the name Squall for the hero, after they guy from Final Fantasy 8, because why the hell not. These were the days when Square and Enix were competing so it seemed like a fun thing to do. So anyway, one of my dudes attack moves was called SquallHit, and I never figured out if that was just what it was always called, or whether they included my selected name in it.
