I think both are true. When the media is controlled and the populace is spoon fed bullshit for a long enough period of time, people who lack critical thinking skills eat it up and vote against their own self interests. People are also very unlikely to take responsibility for their own actions and find it much easier to blame others for their own shortcomings, which leads to tribalism and racism among other things. The other major issue is the giant wealth disparity causing a huge imbalance of power and influence. Couple that with the inability to have politicians not beholden to that power and money (citizens united) and you have the perfect storm of bullshit and corruption.
I really think the quote from Agent K in MIB really sums it up.
A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals, and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.
Don’t get me wrong, there are people who are just trolls and assholes who are beyond saving. But I continue to believe they are exceptions rather than the norm.

I don’t hate this country. Just a few select individuals with too much power and money.

I loved my banana seat. I thought I was the shit when I got one of those really tall flags with the orange pendant to attach to it.

I have two very visible on my chins from those meat grinder petals on bikes back then. And a dark place on my right arm due to trying to ride a wheelie way too fast on sandy pavement and sliding on same sandy pavement for a good 20 ft on that arm. Basically like taking an angle grinder with a sanding disc to my arm for several seconds. Fun times….

Thank you. I was looking at the cars and thinking this was 1970s.
I did shit as a kid I’d never have let my kid even think about. I should have died several times until my mid 20s.

Yeah I live in very rural NC now. I’ve always been this weird mix of redneck and computer nerd. Like I’d totally do the mattress surfing thing but probably rig up LEDs and a web cam to it.

Glow sticks were invented in the early 70s and were pretty available in the mid 80s. But I don’t remember them either (high school in the late 80s).

I missed my opportunity to be a whore. I’m too old and married now.
There was one week about 15 years I was able to fulfill this dream. I remember it fondly.

I will not pay $1000 for a console alone. I would buy a gaming PC for 4x that first. And I’m exactly their target market.

It’s been a long time ago….
For a console: probably en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaboom!_(video_game)
For a computer: for my C64 en.wikipedia.org/…/Ultima_IV%3A_Quest_of_the_Avat…

But do they? It seems like most are very short sighted and opt for immediate gains as opposed to any long term growth.
- Comment on Switch 2 demand appears to be flagging as Nintendo reportedly lowers production 3 weeks ago:
I like it it’s just too damned expensive for what seems to be a minor upgrade from the switch. I mean the main differences are power, storage, display, and controller design and since my switch sits in the docking station and we use external controllers most of those are negated.
I haven’t seen a game that would justify it at this point.

- Comment on Are achievements still relevant in 2026—especially when mods disable them? 5 weeks ago:
Achievements basically boil down to “does it matter to me that other people see that I’ve accomplished something” and that only matters “if it matters to other people that my achievements are worth knowing”. It’s essentially trying to generate interest in a game by creating this social competition and of course FOMO. So I guess it’s just social media advertising.
In my case none of this matters. I play mostly single player games because I enjoy them, not because I care what other people think. Having that info in game is sometimes cool if I want to know I’ve finished everything there is to finish.
From a game developers standpoint this data could be useful. Is this part being used? How long does it take? At what part in the game did they accomplish it? That sorta thing. The publishing of that data in a public space is different beast.
