That is so odd… I’ve only ridden Amtrak a few times, but I was amazed at how many stops were just some small town that happened to lie on the rail line.
Most small towns that lie on a major highway and are supported by commuter traffic are only going to support a truck stop and a few fast food restaurants at best. Sure, a true high speed rail line would likely only stop in larger metropolitan areas, so those meager income sources may dwindle. But on the other hand if I were a rail commuter in one of those rural/suburban areas, I’d be much more likely to spend some time doing a bit of shopping or lingering in a restaurant during that transition from the train to my car after work, than if I were just passing through in my car.

While you’re not wrong, you’re also massively over-analyzing and "WELL AKSHULLY"ing what appears to be a silly one-liner, not a serious attempted dunk on the article.
- Comment on Does anyone use a phone without a protective case? 2 weeks ago:
I refuse to use a case on principle. The idea that you need a case to protect a phone from everyday use is so ass-backwards it hurts my brain. (and was not always the situation!)
It would be so much more space, weight, and cost efficient to simply engineer in the durability provided by a case through the use of proper materials and construction. But apparently marketing thinks nobody would buy a phone that looks and feels out of the box the way a phone with a case feels. So we end up with these thin, elegant, glass and polished aluminum devices… that most of the population has to immediately hide inside a bulky plastic/rubber case to have a chance of surviving 6 months.
Imagine if a carmaker sold a premium vehicle with a polished metal and glass exterior that you had to protect under a vinyl wrap to keep it from rusting and chipping under normal use… they’d be a laughing stock!
- Comment on Bruh, chill 3 weeks ago:
I get that, but these comments strongly imply two things that are generally false: -The main that reason tailgating happens is because someone is camping in the left lane, and -Tailgating is an appropriate response to someone camping in the left lane.
Nobody, literally nobody, ever defends left lane campers, but for some reason the immediate reaction to calling out tailgaters for their dangerous driving is to strawman the caller-outer as a left lane camper.
- Comment on Bruh, chill 3 weeks ago:
I asked for that >.<
- Comment on Bruh, chill 3 weeks ago:
Why is this passive aggressive “hurr durr found the left lane camper” comment on every literally post about left lane tailgaters?
Have you literally never driven in any Metropolitan area ever? I see it daily… lines 10+ cars deep of traffic maybe a single carlength apart, all doing 85 in the left lane, constantly passing middle lane traffic, as if that’s somehow going to make the 1/2 mile of traffic ahead of them go faster.
The number of aggressive tailgaters I see during my commute easily outweighs the left lane campers by 10:1
- Comment on Can you put a ship inside a Klein bottle? 4 weeks ago:
True, but can’t you cork a Klein bottle just as easily?
- Comment on Can you put a ship inside a Klein bottle? 4 weeks ago:
I’d ask the inverse. What definition of “inside” can you apply to a traditional bottle–so as to say that a ship is inside the bottle–that could not also be applied to a Klein bottle. Both of them have a single opening that leads to an enclosed volume.
A Klein bottle may only have one surface, and therefore you can argue it has no topological inside. But a traditional bottle is topologically equivalent to a flat disc, so the same logic would say you can’t put a ship inside one of those either.

Hot take… This trend was just a modern (at its time) reimagining of the TRUE peak of tech design: 80s era clear cases with brightly colored interior components.

I know not everyone loads their media onto a media server, but I sometimes take it for granted how handy it is to fire up the Plex app and check whether already I have this random CD or bluray that I stumbled across at a thrift shop.

I think there has only been one movie that I haven’t finished, even if it was only because I was comfortable on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn: You Don’t Mess With the Zohan
I think the wife and I made 15 minutes before calling it quits l.
Pretty much the epitome of " I expected nothing, and I was still disappointed"

I had no idea what a “Dutch angle” was, so I googled it and was pretty tickled to find that it triggered a Google easter egg :)

Or just run both, period!
Plex is definitely more straightforward to maintain remote access to your content (including library sharing with friends & family). So it may be worth keeping up for that aspect alone, even if you end up liking Jellyfin better.
- Comment on Recommendations for a shower mirror? 7 months ago:
I know this isn’t exactly what you’re asking, but after trying different sprays, coatings, and cleaners to keep my mirror fog free, the most foolproof way to deal with fogging is to deal directly with the cause: the mirror surface is cooler than the surrounding hot humid air, leading to condensation. Running the mirror under shower water for 5-10 seconds to warm it up before shaving has never failed me.
Just thought I’d throw it out there since the anti-fog coatings eventually wear off.
- Comment on House Centipedes 8 months ago:
That’s honestly why they creep me out the most. Spiders will generally be chilling out in a corner somewhere you expect to see them, doing their own thing, and not moving much unless directly disturbed.
Most of my experiences with centipedes involves them darting out from under a baseboard at night and scaring the shit out of me when I’m only half awake. Then by the time I realize what it was, it’s already scrambled across the floor to disappear under some other piece of furniture.

They exist only so you stay on Google’s page and don’t follow a link to another site.
That may be true, but I’d say in the neighborhood of 1/3 - 1/2 of my searches are answered by auto-compiled info cards or similar artifacts.
Just by way of example, my wife and I were casually researching cars lately, and one of the criteria is “does the damn thing fit in our garage??” Typing “Mazda CX-9 length” and having that specific info presented immediately is immensely preferable to clicking into edmonds.com and scrolling through an entire table of specifications.
