Europeans literally see no irony in throwing shade at Americans for hanging onto their traditional measurement system, while also speaking 27 different languages in the span of a few hundred miles.
Maybe come down off your high horse until you get that situation sorted, eh? >.>

To be fair, this post is pretty much the epitome of mildly infuriating.
- Comment on Nature Valley: 10 bars in 5 packs 1 month ago:
Not discounting your mild infuriation, but I am 100% certain that if they switched to being individually wrapped tomorrow, a complaint about excessive packaging would be one of the top posts here.
I’m not sure about Germany, but these have been sold in the US for decades now, and have always been 2 bars per wrapper as long as I can remember.

On top of that, I swear the UI changes 1-2 times per year with software updates. It’s hard to pinpoint since I’m usually 90% asleep when interacting with the alarm, but I know it has changed from tap to swipe and switched sides at least once since I got my last phone in 2022.
There is absolutely no reason for that shit. If you look at an old school alarm clock, the snooze button is the size of a small country, and there is usually a much smaller button or sliding switch to make damn sure you meant to turn the alarm off.

Or do you actually not do this and live in a disgusting, filthy, dirt-covered house all the time?
Sadly, in my limited experience with people who wear their shoes inside by default, it has been this one.

Honestly there is enough rage bait everywhere else, so it’s nice to have a place to commiserate over the truly petty annoyances in life.

God… I can barely remember the time before the top comment threads of every goddamned post were always lazy strings of circle-jerky jokes that you could predict before even clicking into the thread.

It irks me when people categorically state money buys happiness as a rebuttal to the old cliche; because it doesn’t, and insisting it does just seems like contrarianism.
Money certainly does solve many problems that cause misery, and removing misery is a essential step on the path to happiness. Isn’t that a noble enough message?
There are loads of people with plenty of money who are not actually happy. So simply saying “money can buy happiness” also minimizes the real problems of real people.

Fully agreed that Hot/rising is garbage right now. It seems to weight very recent posts with zero comments or upvotes equally with older posts that have robust discussion, so >80% of the content is the same as sorting by New.
- Comment on Is there any way I can stop seeing sports posts? 8 months ago:
Blocking the handful (okay more like couple dozen) sports-related bots did the trick for me.
I don’t mind seeing posts I’m not interested when I scroll All, the annoying part is a wall of 20+ posts, which is mainly a problem when bots are mass-reposting content (sports score for example)
But if you’re really annoyed by seeing irrelevant content, there are two main options:
-
Stop browsing All or Local and switch to your Frontpage, which is only the communities you’ve subscribed to. It’s still nice to browse All once in awhile to get turned onto new communities, but there are also certain communities you can subscribe to specifically for the purpose of seeing new and trending communities.
-
This is more porn-related, but switch to an instance that is not federated with porn-instances. For example, I’m on lemm.ee, and I only rarely see moderately-NSFW content on All or Local.

Good God, the number of products where someone spent the time and effort to design in “systems” for opening/using the package, which are utterly ineffectual is mind boggling.
Did a flimsy cardboard box ever need some special tear tab to begin with?? Hell no, just glue the flap shut and we will open it like every other food box on the planet.
Shit that is infuriating.
- Comment on Sam's Club Tips on Paid Deliveries 10 months ago:
I had the same experience when trying to buy my brother (2 states away) a bottle of whiskey for his birthday. Rather than just hiring a delivery service or paying the driver a fair pre established rate, we are being forced to guess in advance how much of a “tip” (bribe) is necessary to ensure the order gets delivered in a timely and professional manner.
- Comment on Does this instance have a stance on right wing disinformation communities? 10 months ago:
I was just responding to your question of what was the difference between blocking an instance and a community.
The community-sourced labeling is an interesting idea, which I hadn’t really considered. Not sure it fully solves the concern of bad faith actors looking to JAQ-off and otherwise poison discussions but it’s a step in the right direction.
- Comment on Does this instance have a stance on right wing disinformation communities? 10 months ago:
Believe me I do understand why it could be considered problematic. My disagreement stems from the idea that it’s better to have no policy rather than an imperfect policy or one that relies on some discretion.
My point in highlighting that disinformation centers around a few hot button issues is to reinforce that we’re not talking about some nebulous or opinion-driven debate; rather there are a few key disinformation strategies that take advantage of the “bullshit asymmetry” to poison real discussion.
I’m simply unconvinced by arguments that it’s too hard to identify and nip such malicious communities in the bud. Even less so by arguments that doing so is somehow a slippery slope.
- Comment on Does this instance have a stance on right wing disinformation communities? 10 months ago:
I’m also not advocating for killing trolls that bother me… so take care not to belabor a quick metaphor.
The vast majority of disinformation comes in a few key topics related to current hot button political issues and is generally pushed by recognizable sources. It’s not unreasonable to expect admins to check into user reports of disinformation and organized trolling against known sources. I’m not an admin so I’m not going to write up the specific criteria right here and now.
Choosing not to do so is also a conscious choice to host such content.
- Comment on Does this instance have a stance on right wing disinformation communities? 10 months ago:
From a practical perspective: it’s much easier to choose not to see content from an entire instance I’ve deemed unhelpful or harmful than it is to play whackamole with communities popping up on my home instance.
It’s the difference between my preferred news outlet broadcasting garbage vs a different channel.
- Comment on Why most posts (so far as I can tell) have very short lifespan tendency? 10 months ago:
In lots of the old forums I used to use, commenting on a thread would subscribe you to it. I have no idea if the software supports it, but I’d like the ability to sort by New Posts to Subscribed Threads, or something similar. I think being able to keep tabs on activity in threads you have posted in might help prolong the lifetime.
The comment about thread necromancy also brings back memories. I’m not really sure why that was ever such a taboo, especially since reposting old topics was also frowned upon…
- Comment on Does this instance have a stance on right wing disinformation communities? 10 months ago:
That is a fair point, but I submit its kind of tangential or maybe orthogonal the core topic. The problem of people not being able to discuss controversial topics maturely is not improved by hosting clear bad-faith conversation. That just poisons the well and makes it even harder to hold the good faith conversations.
You don’t wring your hands about throwing out the baby with the bathwater when you’re faced with a bucket of sewage.

End of the world? No.
By the same token, a few bugs in my house is not the end of the world, but I’d still prefer to have screens on the window and keep a flyswatter handy 😉
