- Comment on After parting ways with EA, WRC (Dirt Rally) gets new home and six-year deal to "reboot" rally series 5 days ago:
EA rarely makes good use of the devs it consumes and destroys, unfortunately. This isn’t even the first racing team that I was a fan of they’ve destroyed. Hell, it’s not even the first British racing team they’ve destroyed. They’re truly a plague on the industry.
While I definitely hope the people laid off all land on their feet, having a handful of people from a large team show up at another studio doesn’t really do anything for us. We’ll never get another DriveClub or OnRush or Dirt 5 because the magic that team made has been scattered to the winds.

In a perfect world, sure, but I only know of one time when most of a team stayed together after being laid off and that was when Sony shut down Evolution Studios and around 80% of them were picked up by Codemasters. It’s not likely to happen again and the Nacon has multiple fully staffed racing teams, including the one that made the WRC games before EA bought Codemasters and destroyed them.

I’ve been beating this drum for a long time and all it’s gotten me is yelled at. I’ve seen some excellent shows that are ~12 eps per season, but every single one of them would have been even better with more episodes. You don’t get proper character development or world building with a dozen episodes. It’s frankly a terrible way to make TV shows. You may as well watch a movie trilogy and call it a day. I think of some of my favorite shows from the 80s and 90s that had 20+ episode seasons and there are all these standout episodes that really helped make the shows that we absolutely would not have gotten with this awful British TV model of 3 episodes every 5 years because there wouldn’t be any time to devote to a side story that later feeds into a plot development or a character arc. I’ve often heard people say the old shows had a bunch of filler episodes, but outside of clip shows (which to be clear are awful), they really didn’t. Some people just can’t deal with a story that isn’t very linear. Deep Space 9’s In the Pale Moonlight, Voyager’s Year of Hell, and really pretty much all of Babylon 5 would not have been made in today’s TV environment, and that’s a real shame.

I wouldn’t hold your breath. Word is, those recent EA layoffs hit a lot of the Codemasters people, including the teams working on their rally games. They mostly kept the F1 team because that series inexplicably sells tons every release (never been an F1 fan myself, but there does seem to be an appetite for those games). Anyone not on the F1 team was moved to another internal EA team whose name escapes me at the moment and they’re working as a support team for others.

I’ve had a OnePlus phone during that time and they had the same option.

It looks the same on my 2024 Moto G Stylus. In fact, the battery icon with the percentage next to it has been an option on every phone I’ve used for the past decade or so, at least.

Nice haul! I wish I’d known about the existence of these sooner. I’d definitely have gotten a bunch of these.
I don’t suppose you know if there’s another company that’s gonna end up with the license? From what I can tell, this company has only had the license for a few years (since 2021, I think). Seems a pretty short run for a franchise this big.

The reason people are fascinated by this is because many people are deeply stupid, and willingly so. Between lacking education and not wanting to learn anything, you get people who think candles can be magically magnified by pots.

You’re all wrong. It’s DriveClub. They put so much detail in the simulation of air pressure, angle of light coming from the sun, dynamic volumetric clouds, and so much more. On top of that, they simulate their weather on the conditions 100 miles out from the actual racetrack to make things as realistic as possible. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

I had no idea! That’s pretty interesting, and also slightly annoying since I’d much rather have more Riddick instead of Fast and Furious 25 through 89: This Time It’s Even More Furiouser™.

Furya? Seems a little late to try to ride the Furiosa hype, but I’m always down for more Riddick.

I find it interesting when people who are confronted with disagreement about a plot point they like resort to making implications about the other person’s character instead of discussing anything in the post they’re responding to.

The Burn being caused by a magic baby having a tantrum kinda ruined the whole setting for me. There’s a lot of potential with moving to the 32nd century, but if that’s the quality of storytelling we’re gonna get, it doesn’t seem worth it. I’d much rather see a 24th century setting that follows up on the galaxy post Dominion War and the return of Voyager. There’s a lot of untold story there that would be great to see… Although I’d hope it’s not more magic baby style stuff.
