- Comment on How long do we have before PCs get locked bootloaders and corporations ban installation of "non-approved" software? (for context: Google is restricting sideloading worldwide on Android ETA 2027) 2 days ago:
yes most chromebooks if you own them you do what you want because google knows even if they did lock them down more someone out there would be waiting with a soldering iron to figure out how to mod them into running other things. But thats not the same thing as a company that buys devices for their employees and doesnt give said employees permission to open them (without risking their job anyway). The point being, the “demand” for such systems is already mostly met, normal PC users/ gamers wouldnt actually buy a product like that, because if they did it would just be a “Console”. You couldnt force it on users because there isn’t a monopoly of PCs like there is with phones or game consoles
Actually I should have said in my original post, Game Consoles also qualify, because the PS4/5 Xbox whatever, the last 2 generations they’re literally just locked down PCs with very specific hardware.

Such pcs already exist and are used by buinesses and schools all over… Mostly chromebooks and i suppose apple also fits that criteria.
But it would be very hard to stop a determined hacker who has physical access to a device and doesnt mind voiding any warranties or user agreements.
- Comment on What should I call the cable I need? 2 weeks ago:
There is no way they connected fiber to router with a freaking phone cord.
Either you misunderstood or they lied but what you need is a standard ethernet cable with the same connection on both ends.
Also if someone is professionally installing hardware they shouldn’t be reusing your existing cables anyway.
You have an XY problem. If what you need is to connect your phillips hue hub then just say that instead.

I made sure to remove all my posts before i left when they started blocking anonymous vpn users. 3 accounts across 15+ years all gone because of their stupid policies.

If taler uses the same banking systems as visa and mastercard, they can be pressured the same way. It sounds like taler shifts even more responsibility to the merchants and they would still comply with KYC which means you can expect stuff like submitting an ID scan for “Verification” in order to comply with laws.
I do hope it takes off, because fuck visa and mastercard, but im not gonna get my hopes up.

Like peertube for music yes. Maybe not as feature complete yet but it aims to be similar.
Federation doesnt automatically share the actual audio files but peer tube also doesnt work like that either really. Funkwhale users can follow each other and have shared playlists across pods though.

In theory funkwhale can be private, but no one is going to bother you for having a public one. Mine had been running for 2 years without any takedown requests.
If enough people started using funkwhale to the point it actually affected spotifys revinue, but as much as i would like for that to happen, i dont think its very likely.

Well if thats your goal buy their music or merch, or just send them cash directly, most artists are on bandcamp, smaller artists will at least have a venmo or cashapp you can send to.
Artists arent making their rent money on whatever pittance spotify pays them, you would do more good for the actual artist if you just promoted their work and gave them a few bucks directly.

Why not just stop using spotify? You cant possibly stream enough to cost them more then they earn in a month they earn from you using them. Even on mute they can still count you as an active user when it comes to selling ads and promiting themselves.
If you really want to hurt spotify, use one of the services like Soundiiz that lets you export your lists and library, grab a 2 month trial of tidal for $2 and point tidal-dl to download it all for offline use. Get yourself a nice dedicated music player like a classic ipod running rockbox. If space is an issue convert from flac to opus.
If you really, really, want to hurt spotify do what i did and take the above instructions and then also spin up your own FunkWhale pod so everyone can also enjoy that music without giving corporations like spotify a dime.
You arent going beat corporations by using their products “too much”, the way to beat them is to replace them with self hosted alternatives.
