- Comment on When people die in wildfires, is it that the fire spread too fast for people to mobilise escape? Or more that people were delayed leaving? 1 day ago:
Usually it’s the smoke that gets them…
- Comment on How would you evaluate having more pay vs an easier job? 2 days ago:
In my experience, the more pay the easier the job
- Comment on If a space Alien landed in the states. And hooked up with one of his or her fellow travelers and had a kid in the US would that kid be a US citizen? Or do we have something in place for it? 1 week ago:
My dog was born in the US and I’m pretty certain he isn’t considered a citizen. There are billions (if not trillions) of individuals born in the US every year who aren’t citizens because they aren’t humans.
- Comment on Why it is that in the USA for most people the default color for a casual sock is white but in most other places the default is black? 1 week ago:
You’re still doing separate loads based on color? I thought that was a thing of the past…
- Comment on Has anyone ever actually had their vehicle tabs stolen? 1 week ago:
I have never heard this in my life. It never even occured to me someone might steal them!
- Comment on Do you think that the MK Ultra program actually shut down? 2 weeks ago:
Of course.
- Comment on Do you think that Edward Snowden is a hero? 3 weeks ago:
I think he blew up his life to reveal something the general public probably should be aware of, but ultimately didn’t care about.
Idk if it was heroic, but it certainly was interesting how he released the info slowly to get catch the government in numerous lies attempting to downplay the truth of the matter. One of the Obama administration’s biggest blights.
- Comment on Do people really give a shit on what a US President wear? I just see from time to time that they bring up the Tan Suit Incident with Obama. What is or was the big deal? I slept since then. 4 weeks ago:
A certain subset of the media had extreme double standards for Obama, over previous presidents. Because Obama was generally pretty scandal free, the media had to latch on to any minor “misdeed.” So we saw news stories where they discussed how horrible he was to wear a tan suit or ask for the fancy mustard instead of regular.
Usually, when people bring it up in the present day, it’s to point out the hypocrisy of those media sources. Could you imagine Fox news spending weeks discussing how unprofessional Trump looks wearing (insert perfectly innocuous outfit here)?
Note: Obama was certainly not perfect, and he did have his issues, but generally not the sort that could fill a 24hr news channel for 8 years straight. Especially when his actual scandals weren’t actually things that particular organization was against (NSA spying on Americans, extrajudicial killing of citizens abroad, etc).
- Comment on Colorado Governor Jared Polis once again vetoes bill that would make it easier for unions to organize 1 month ago:
Don’t have to do anything to send him packing. He’s term limited and done after this year.
- Comment on Is evolution only affected by mortality and birth rate? 1 month ago:
Yes, assuming they are completely isolated from the surface population. It’s called genetic drift.
There’s a pretty interesting group of people who were pretty isolated in Kentucky who turned blue, which would be an example of this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Fugates
- Comment on If a person were paranoid about a potential food shortage in the next two to three years, what should they stock up on now? 2 months ago:
YMMV, especially since I live in an arid climate so don’t have to worry about things like mold. We just use bins to store things like rice. We keep pasta in the packaging it comes in. Haven’t had any issues with food going bad over the years.
- Comment on If a person were paranoid about a potential food shortage in the next two to three years, what should they stock up on now? 2 months ago:
Dried beans. Rice. An established fruit/vegetable garden.

The best thing about Jeff Bezos is Mackenzie Scott.
- Comment on When is the best time to leave your dog in the car without getting a window smashed from a wannabe hero? Info Inside 2 months ago:
Seems like a good way to get your car stolen, with your dog inside.
- Comment on When is the best time to leave your dog in the car without getting a window smashed from a wannabe hero? Info Inside 2 months ago:
…are you leaving the car running while you aren’t there? Because if so, I don’t think your biggest concern should be getting your window smashed.
- Comment on [deleted] 2 years ago:
if I did, I would have to be obliged and follow their cultures
This doesn’t seem true to be. There is no culture police who will come and enforce the way you live your life to follow the norms of your ethnic label(s).
I don’t have a culture
This is impossible. Everyone has a culture. You may not follow all the cultural norms or traditions of where you are from, but it is guaranteed that who you are was impacted by the culture you were raised in. There is no such thing as neutral, otherwise you are saying your personal culture would fit in everywhere in the world (Mexico, USA, Italy, Russia, Japan, Philippines, etc).

What do you think the term Latino means, and why don’t you want to identify as one?

FYI Central America is also in North America
- Comment on Touchscreen smartphones aren't even fun or novel anymore, they're just necessities for daily life 2 years ago:
A quick Google showed me a $40 smartphone from Walmart. Granted it’s probably pretty terrible, but it does go to show that they aren’t all priced like luxury toys. If you want a luxury branded phone, you’ll pay luxury prices.
- Comment on Why did Lemmy change from post/comment score to count? 2 years ago:
I’ve been here since June, and it’s never had karma score calculated for the profile. My understanding was that they didn’t want to promote karma farming like is done on Reddit.
- Comment on What the hell is this shit? Instead of pushing for the return to traditional pensions, capitalism is celebrating the idea that Millennials & Gen Z may simply never be able to stop working. 2 years ago:
Why should people push for traditional pensions? I don’t want to be stuck at a crappy job just because leaving would reset my retirement clock. It’s the same reason healthcare shouldn’t be attached to the employer either.

- Comment on How can I practice being more emotionally available as a man? 2 years ago:
In addition to this, understanding the emotions you are experiencing and being able to put a name to them will help. A lot of cultural expectations pressure men to only feel anger/happiness, but there is so much more nuance. Being able to recognize that and, eventually, communicate it will be massive to this undertaking.
I’d recommend using something like an emotion wheel to define how you are feeling at any given moment in time.

- Comment on Does a food being like 'high in B6 vitamins' or whatever actually mean anything or make anyone feel tangibly different? 2 years ago:
I think if you are low on B6 you will definitely notice it. If your levels of B6 are fine, then you probably won’t notice a difference.
- Comment on What hobbies did you pick up during the pandemic and have you been able to keep them up? 2 years ago:
I got into doing yoga. I did it daily for about 9 months straight in 2020, and have never felt better. I go through phases now where I can keep it up, but I can also go a while without doing it. I wish I could get back into doing it daily because I feel so much better with the consistency.
