- Comment on Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of July 7th 20 hours ago:
I recently bought a Steam Deck and have been getting back into gaming after a long hiatus.
I used to play mainly competitive online games (mostly Counter-Strike) and got kinda burnt out on them. It made me not want to game for a while, so I’m diving into slower-paced, single-player games.
Viewfinder and Superliminal are both perspective-based puzzle games that I’ve been really enjoying. Tickles my brain in kind of the same way the Portal games did on my first playthroughs.
Speaking of Portal, I’ve also started Portal: Revolution which is a fan-made mod whose story takes place between the two official games. For what it is, it’s honestly quite excellent, the puzzles are challenging and fun. Not quite as well-polished as Portal 2, but so far it’s giving the first game a run for its money.
I’ve also been emulating a ton of Mario Kart 8, trying to git gud, my friend group often breaks it out at get-togethers and I want to surprise them with my sudden increase in skill!
- Comment on The rise of Whatever 20 hours ago:
I think what the author describes as the culture of Whatever is also a big reason everything kinda sucks now. It’s all run by MBAs who have no relation to the product and have no vision except “line goes up”. They have no incentive to care about the product they’re offering because they couldn’t care less about it.

Thanks for not participating in the vehicular arms race!

I think this advice made more sense when the majority drove reasonably-sized vehicles rather than the huge trucks and SUVs that pollute our roads now (at least in North America).
I wouldn’t be surprised if this bit of advice contributes to the problem in OP.

Totally AI. Look at the seating, the illusion really falls apart.
Also, Fieri and Bourdain were not fans of each other, Bourdain once said Fieri looked “like a Simpsons character that was designed by committee”.

This just made me imagine a modded Civic but with rockets.
Honestly, knowing people who mod Civics, I wouldn’t be surprised of this has already been done somewhere in the world.
- Comment on How 100,000 Hippies Tried to Levitate the Pentagon in 1967 4 weeks ago:
From Wikipedia:
In a symbolic act, activist Abbie Hoffman vowed to levitate the Pentagon. Hoffman claimed he would employ the use of psychic energy to levitate the Pentagon until it turned orange and begin to vibrate, at which time the war in Vietnam would end. The event was accompanied by Allen Ginsberg leading Tibetan chants to assist Hoffman. While levitation did not occur, the act served as a powerful symbol of the protesters’ opposition to the Vietnam War.

Yeah, shitpost, that’s what I said!
- Comment on I see trees of green 5 weeks ago:
Gone into the wilderness to escape from the woes of modern capitalistic society, yet unable to escape the coping mechanisms used to survive the rat race. Trapped inside the addiction, a smoke and a coffee to wake up, a toke and a drink to pass out, in an endless cycle, just to blur the daily toil into a barely-tolerable disassociative carousel. Even the moments of leisure have become a task to accomplish; have your pittance of a vacation, stressing about how tightly scheduled you are, stressing about how much everything costs, stressing about the mounting responsibilities pilling up awaiting your arrival.
I dunno man, I think it’s just a shitpost.
- Comment on The solution to many problems 5 weeks ago:
I won’t lie though, judging from how much of the litter where I live is cigarettes butts and packs, there seems to be a rather large overlap.
Add people who drink Tim Horton’s coffee and that’s a solid 80% of the litter I see.
(Am smoker, will carry smelly butts rather than throw them on the street)

This is such a dumb comment, I love it. It honestly made me feel better about things. Everything is just star remnants trying to coexist.

This person pops up every time someone on Lemmy mentions web browsers to aggressively deride Mozilla for being mostly funded by Google (which is a fair point that I agree with) and then they turn around and recommend Chromium-based browsers.
I’ve tried and I found it difficult to engage in good-faith conversation with them.

- Comment on Hulu quizzing about the ads played 5 months ago:
That’s really odd, I bring up piracy in conversation decently often (usually if I’m talking about a show and someone asks me if that’s on Netflix/Prime/Disney+/Hulu or whatever and I have to tell them I haven’t a clue)
The reaction had never been judgement, more so curiosity about how I go about my piracy.

artificial insemination isn’t torture.
Doing so to a creature who can’t consent is pretty wack though.
cows aren’t kept constantly pregnant
Female mammals, including cows, produce milk as a result of pregnancy in order to feed their young. The dairy industry is for-profit, they’re not going to let their dairy cows have downtime from producing milk if there’s money to be made.
kicking and beating cows isn’t part of husbandry.
The meat and dairy industries have lobbied hard for ag-gag laws criminalizing photography on their farms after abuses have been discovered by undercover investigators and activists. It is undoubtedly a part of animal agriculture. Here’s a whole paper about it, if it interests you.
killing cows at the end of their useful life is fine.
It definitely isn’t the worse part of the miserable lives we make them live after breeding them in massive numbers. It’s probably a relief at that point.
Also, just a sidenote here, I scrolled a bit through your history and you seem to go on the defensive for meat and dairy whenever you come across anything relating to veganism or the negative impacts of those industries. You engage with vegan content much more than I do and I’m vegan! I don’t think I can change your mind about veganism, nor do I really feel the desire to write any more than I already have. But, I don’t know, maybe go comment on stuff you enjoy rather than getting riled up about this stuff? It might make for a more enjoyable experience on lemmy.

No one wants to eliminate fire trucks and ambulances in favour of bikes.
When people talk about “ending cars” they’re talking about private ownership of personal vehicles. It’s not necessary to address first responders because that’s not what anti-car people are talking about.

I live in Canada, so I’m obviously biased in the sense that we’re one of the countries most affected by US politics, what with them being our largest trade partner and having a massive land border with them.
That being said, are you unaware of the global rise in right-wing extremism and fascism following the 2016 election? The US is the richest country in the world, with the largest military, and they also have a tremendous amount of soft power (at least in English-speaking countries) through their cultural influence in media exports.
I don’t understand what you gain by pretending the US isn’t a massive global power with huge influence over international relations.

I’m also a motorcyclist (but hold the motor) and my experience is very similar to yours.
I almost got hit a few weeks back by a car driver trying to turn right on red whilst on a fucking Facetime call, with the phone held up right in front of their face. If I hadn’t been in a rush I would have let them have an earful.
Like, please don’t ever use your phone while driving, but if you absolutely have to be a despicable human being, can you at least look away from the screen when navigating through intersections??
