100%. One of the reasons I didn't join a union as a skilled worker is that I don't want to be locked into doing the same exact thing for the rest of my career.

Good for them! I'm glad they got an excellent contract!
But we need to keep in mind that "and benefits" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. I looked at the contract, the pay is something like 30-40 an hour. Good, definitely a living wage, but not $170,000 good. People see that number and think it's the salary.

Weird when you consider how little Jews we have in Ireland
Easier to hate someone when you don't see them all the time at the bar, at the office, at the coffee shop...
- Comment on Someone is going around my neighbourhood and sticking anti semitic messages to street lights. 1 year ago:
Two Jewish men are sitting at a train stop. One takes out a paper and starts reading it. The other glances over, and says "What? Why are you reading a Nazi newspaper??"
The first one says, "if I read the normal newspaper it's all doom and gloom. But when I read the Nazi newspaper, they say we control the banks, the government, Hollywood...makes me feel better."
- Comment on higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs 1 year ago:
Because then they'd have to raise prices.
Especially nowadays with so many people looking up menu prices online before going somewhere, it's a way to present your prices as lower than they actually are.
- Comment on higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs 1 year ago:
I will bet you that the servers do not see a dime of this 18% service charge.
That's exactly why so many restaurants are adding service charges nowadays. It's a way to legally take tip money from servers.
- Comment on A real estate billionaire said Fridays are ‘dead forever’ for offices, and remote work guru Nick Bloom says he’s right—it’s part of a new 3-part week 1 year ago:
imo (and I'm not a manager, though I occasionally do manage people) there's different levels of collaboration. If you get the whole company in one room, that's one level of energy. If you get 5 separate but related teams in a room, that's another level. And if you get just 5 random people from the company together, that's another level.
There's definitely a balance to be had, but having your office be empty every Friday is not efficient, even if you want to increase socializaion and collaboration.
Plus there's some benefit to providing workers a place that isn't their house to work. Some people just need to go somewhere else to be at their most productive, not necessarily just for socializing.

And ideally this is how it should work to maximize usefulness of the space...oh, everyone else is gone on Fridays, I'll come in Friday instead of Tuesday
Still coming in 3 days a week except now everyone is happier

- Comment on Supermarket plastic bag charge has led to 98% drop in use in England, data shows 1 year ago:
If I do need a bag I’ll just spend $0.25 on a reusable bag.
Which is actually making the central issue - pollution and GHGs - worse than if we just had thin-film single use bags.
- Comment on Supermarket plastic bag charge has led to 98% drop in use in England, data shows 1 year ago:
All the data says that no, people are not reusing them.
Anecdotally, it makes sense. You left your bag in the trunk, or at home, or it turns out you got slightly too many groceries, or you're staying at a friend's house and you pop out to get some groceries and don't have your bag...
