- Comment on Steam Machine pricing announced (from $1049-$1428 USD), reservation lists open 1 day ago:
i pieced together a comparable 2tb on pcpartpicker, using the cheapest reputable choices and vendors. it was about $200-250 less for the pc (without an os).

uh, oh. i bought two extra pair when i found some that actually fit and were ‘affordable’. still wearing the first pair, so these other two have yet to be taken out of the bags they came home from the store in. that was almost two years ago.

- Comment on Just How Much Are E.V. Drivers Saving With Gas Prices Still High? Over a long period, gas prices tend to be more volatile than electricity rates. 1 week ago:
of course gas prices are ‘volatile’ compared to electric. one is hardly regulated, is based on the whims of the wealthy and producers, affected by regional ‘issues’ on the other side of the planet… while the other is regulated in most parts of the u.s.
my per kwh rate has rarely strayed more than a half cent higher or lower than it was in 2000 and is nearly the same now as it was then (public utility and hydro). meanwhile, gas prices the last 20 years look like a sharpie scribble.

it sure catches the eye.
- Comment on Cheese is available 1 week ago:
velveeta has a similar recipe as the ‘singles’, it contains some cheese, but also a lot of stuff that isn’t.
- Comment on Cheese is available 1 week ago:
the cheese slices that fast food burger joints (mcdonalds, bk, etc) use is real cheese. the “zomg americans don’t know what cheese is” stuff.. the wrapped ‘singles’ is the processed junk-restaurants don’t normally use that on sandwiches or burgers, but they might use it or velveeta (similar but sold in blocks) in a smooth melty sauce or something. i use it in some hotdishes and part of the cheeses i put in homemade mac & cheese.

henry gray, the author of the iconic medical text.
albert grey, former governor general (ca). the grey cup (cfl championship game and trophy) takes its name from him.

for the color i use “a” always.. but was taught either one was acceptable, unless it’s a name (proper noun).

the last ide adapter i got (this would be at least 15 years ago) came with a separate power supply for the molex connection. i’ve used that power supply more often than the adapter itself.
- Comment on How tf do people who work 8-5 M-F get any life done? 1 week ago:
4-day work weeks are great, especially if you have a significant commute, because you’re cutting 20% of that right out. the adding 2 hours to every work day, not so much; but the longer hours can mean that traffic is a bit lighter. the guaranteed week day off is huge when you have ‘stuff’ to do.
- Comment on Is it possible to install a distro directly from online ? 1 week ago:
probably lack of volunteers to make it uefi compatible, and not worth putting paid talent on an optional feature used by a really, really small number of people. bitlocker-as-default would have broke it for good anyway.
- Comment on Is it possible to install a distro directly from online ? 1 week ago:
is what? endless? it is a distribution, produced by the endless foundation.
https://endlessglobal.com/foundation/access/operating-systemmy ‘monitor’ (really, an aio with hdmi in) runs win10/endless dual boot. this is the endless side. note the loop device in the gnome disks window, that’s the .img on c:\ that holds endless. efi grub handles the boot menu. all set up by the endless for windows ‘installer’.
- Comment on Is it possible to install a distro directly from online ? 1 week ago:
the wubi installer. i remember that. installed ubuntu inside a container file and added boot entry so could choose at boot time. yea, that was never really supported when it was offered but it mostly worked.
endless os does have that option yet today. and it does work–with some caveats: it’s slow af with a hdd. well, immutable distros in general are, but this install method just makes it worse. and your windows c: cannot be encrypted (e.g. bitlocker). also be aware that the next version (endless 7) that’s in development will change pretty much everything ‘under the hood’ that makes endless what it is, as they’re moving from their customized gnome and in-house immutable debian base to an immutable based on gnome os itself.

- Comment on President Trump roundly booed by New York crowd at NBA Finals Game 3 at MSG 2 weeks ago:
The first sitting U.S. president to attend a finals game, Trump, 79, of New York, was booed louder than the San Antonio Spurs. He was shown long enough for the fans lustily booing him to see him smirk.
that’s precisely why he does this, goes to public events where he knows he will get a cold reception. he feeds off it.

- Comment on On an emergency power supply with AC and DC electrical plugs, which do I use to charge or power appliances? 2 weeks ago:
if you’re like me and just need the noise from the fan, and not the air circulation, there are other, more efficient ways to get white noise.. some of which would have battery power available.
for instance, i use an old laptop (with an internal battery for ‘backup’) and usb powered speakers (the ones built in aren’t loud enough when the lid is closed (it runs that way). if the power goes out, the laptop runs for several hours (even with the old battery) before it hibernates due to a low battery.
- Comment on On an emergency power supply with AC and DC electrical plugs, which do I use to charge or power appliances? 2 weeks ago:
if you’d plug a device into a regular wall outlet for power, it’s ac. if your power bank has an internal inverter and provides an ac outlet, you should be able to just plug it in–provided its power demands fit within the output specs of the power bank. a normal box fan using 20-75w (approximately what ours here are, depending on age. newer models are more efficient) should be ok.
