“Greetings from Germany…” ah yeas the bi-yearly reminder that the Germans do in fact exist and have access to the internet in their mystical land.
- Comment on GOG seemingly shares that they are considering physical PC 'big box' games. Maybe? 5 days ago:
yes! the maps were awesome. Or some other stuff you’d get with the game. Like with the first Max Payne you got a really cool mousepad. used that thing for years. Also had one that I believe came with Star Wars Rebel Assault.
- Comment on GOG seemingly shares that they are considering physical PC 'big box' games. Maybe? 6 days ago:
do it. I don’t care about the practicality of it all I loved those big boxes. But they also need to have the big manuals inside also.
Some of those manuals were absolutely awesome. Like the one for the first Heavy Gear. or the old flight sim games. Or like the original release of Final Fantasy 7 on PC by Edios came with a brady’s strategy guide. Heck bring back strategy guides too! I remember when World of Warcraft first came out I picked up the strategy guide with it cause it was full of WoW related Penny-Arcade comics in it and I was (heck still am) a massive fan of Penny-Arcade.

they cost about the same though. An Asus slim external 8x DVD usb 2.0 writer costs $50. a 256gb thumb drive costs $50. And i’m using 256GB as an example for modern games that can potentially be well over 100gb. Add to the fact said DVD drive is going to last a lot longer than a USB thumb drive. those thumb drives have a lifespan of like 5 years.
- Comment on End of an era? 1 week ago:
eventually but that will likely be long after most of us are dead. old consoles and carts are built like a brick house and most of them are repairable even games that have batteries. Just look at the N64 for example. that thing is like the Toyata truck of consoles.

man just release another better version of the PSP/Vita. those things were awesome.
- Comment on GTA 6 is a 'singleplayer experience,' GTA Online may be sold separately 1 week ago:
yes but if you initially charge for it then you can make MORE money.
Honestly they could go the MMO route of old and charge you for the game, then charge you a monthly sub, then charge you via an ingame shop and people would gladly pay it. I mean hell just look at WoW, that thing is still raking in money 20+ years after initial release and it does all of the above.

there are a lot of gems for the DC ESPECIALLY if you import from japan or heck just burn japanese games to a CD-R.
Honesly yeah going the GD-Rom route really hurt them. the system was just so painfully easy to pirate for and play imports.
- Comment on Is gaming better as a kid or an adult? 2 weeks ago:
I think gaming as a kid was better simply because of the fact there was a bit of mystery to it.
you rarely knew about upcoming game releases unless it was a major title or was heavily advertised in like GamePro or EGM. most of the time you’d go to the store or a rental place and you’d discover a game right there on the shelf. Some of my favourite games I never knew existed until I rented them from Blockbuster. And many times recommendations game from previously said magazines or word of mouth via your friends. And if a game was cancelled prior to release chances are you wouldn’t be bummed about it simply because you probably didn’t know it existed in the first place.
We don’t have that now. now everything is covered from head to toe everywhere or in early access or whatever. takes the fun out of it.
Also there was nothing better than picking up a game and reading the manual on the drive home.

woah wait THIS is the dude from that story about the 80 something year old who had his entire Star Wars Lego collection stolen by some lego store!? holy crap the fuck is going on.
I briefly read a short blurb about it the other day and then today I see this “reckless ben” posted all over the place and had no clue the two things were related.

- Comment on Is it safe to use a non-gaming computer for light gaming? 5 weeks ago:
I have a Thinkpad E595 that has a Ryzen 7 and an inegrated Radeon Vega 10 GPU. I game on it. works just dandy.
I’m left handed so the fact it has a numpad makes it instantly better for me than a gaming computer. add to the fact since it’s a thinkpad it’s reliable. like 6 years old and still running perfectly fine.
compare that to the POS Asus ROG Strix G15 I recently had. crapped on me in less than 4 years because the mobo just went to shit. constantly overheated to the point it cooked itself even with repasting every few months and cleaning the fans. crap computer, never buy Asus.

well duh. You can test this yourself and even ALLOW the agent to access the internet. if you asks it to build something let it pick it’s own language. 9 times out of 10 it’s going to pick a language that tech bros and tech blogs have been raving about on linkedin and other sites. AND then it generally wont’ utilize the latest API or update to said language if no one has written about said latest API/update. months ago I tried this as a test. Claude selected Smithy and Rust I believe (can’t remember exactly) but the problem was it was utilizing an out of date Smithy version to try and get it to work with an up to date Rust version even though the latest Smithy was available it refused to utilize it. Why? well no one wrote about Smithy. So it would use the version it could find blog posts and articles written about it.
Now if you take that away from the agent, it’s not going to know what to use.
- Comment on Do I belong in tech anymore? - On quitting, the spread of AI, and the loss of an ideal. 2 months ago:
I’m also quitting or rather retiring this year. a couple years ago I pivoted from being a contract/consultant dev to doing consultation work to clean up AI slop that various companies produced.
I had hoped that eventually my clients would get it, would realize that utilizing LLMs for end to end builds and vibe coding your way to a final product didn’t work but…no…they aren’t getting it. They refuse to acknowledge it.
I’m tired. I’m tired of the same song and dance with every client “hey this app we made isn’t scaling and there’s a lot of issues with it, can you run a code review and tell is where we went wrong?” “sure you used AI to build this from end to end via a vibe coder who doesn’t know any of the languages the AI used. you need to start over with actual real devs” and nope. they just find another vibe coder that they feel can write better prompts.
So I’m quitting. I can’t do it anymore. I was hoping this bubble would have burst by now but the way, especially recently, companies are fighting tooth and nail to keep these shit producing agents going because they’re way too invested now is worrying. IF this bubble bursts it’s going to take EVERYONE with it. Everyone. so I’m getting out now and hope my money is still worth something when it does burst.

right but at the height of WoW’s popularity you had to buy the game/expansions and you still have the buy the expansions to this day.

to be fair it was a console seller and A LOT of people bought the Wii just to play that at family gatherings and like inviting people over for dinner. My parents bought a Wii just for it and never bought another game for the Wii.
I was working at an EB Games when the Wii came out and a good chunk of people would just buy the console with no games attached to it. They just wanted Wii Sports. AND THEN when they brought out the new version of Wii Sports…man that thing sold like hot cakes.

- Comment on Why do some people with college degrees and an education, still act so fucking stupid? 2 months ago:
she’s a teacher…that’s what scares me more. she’s teaching kids. And the even MORE scary thing is she hates kids. she refuses to have her own because, and I quote, she “can’t stand children”. Essentially she’s good at cramming/studying the lesson plans and then info dumping it on the kids. Now trying to get her to actually understand or teach you what’s she’s actually dumped onto the kids well after the fact? good luck. I tried that once. One week she taught the kids some subject on earth science, tectonic plates I believe, I asked her a week later at a family dinner about it because she brought it up. she couldn’t explain it. it was out of her mind already.

“book smarts” and “street smarts” are two completely different things. My sister is book smart. skipped a couple grades, went to university twice, once for her degree and again for her masters. She’s by all means well educated.
She’s dumb as a bag of rocks. She’s really good at studying. she’s a pro at it. but none of that knowledge is ever retained for extended periods of time. Once its “useful” i.e. for a test/exam/SAT/etc then it’s tossed out of her head. I can’t recall what she earned her masters in but if you challenge her to talk about it today she can’t. that’s the primary reason I can’t remember is because she literally is unable to talk about it.

they would turn it into a a sort of play on the mrbeast bullshit. that’s all they would have to substitute. instead of being a Korean children’s game it’d be like youtube challenge bullshit. I.E. who can keep their hand on this stack of money the longest and when someone lets go they get shot.

I’ve found the same thing. a year or so ago there was a humble bundle for a whole bunch of 40k e-books so I got it and tried getting into them. a lot of them were just “meh”. The Salamanders book was alright but man does it just trudge along.
