One time, we pried the backs off some claymores, and daisy-chained them together with det cord. Smelled like a new can of tennis balls. Plasticizer off-gassing, I gather.

I had an urge to make a baseball-related joke about that throwback, but I feel like pro sports are a net drain on society, so I’m just gonna make this dumb meta comment about it. Good one, though.

Yeah, you’re right. I guess it’s just a matter of where one falls on the Kinsey scale. But again, that also undercuts the original analogy.
- Comment on Anon vibes with his gf's brother 5 months ago:
That’s totally fair; I was under no illusion that it was. That doesn’t make it a good analogy. Anyone who is active on social media and has an ounce of introspection would have reason to question whether or not they might fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. Indeed, in many online spaces, embracing non-neurotypical status is seen as positive, and participants have a social incentive to espouse autistic traits.
Whereas straight people (the group referred to by the analogy) do not, I believe (this is obviously just conjecture, and not at all scientific), generally have cause to question their sexuality, nor are they socially incentivized to do so, unless their peer group is unusually weighted toward non cis/het individuals.
- Comment on Anon vibes with his gf's brother 5 months ago:
I don’t think that’s a good analogy at all. Via the power of social media, we are all on the autism spectrum. Everyone, neurotypical or no, shares some traits that can be deemed autistic. There’s no particular metric or attribute you can point to that rules it out. Meanwhile, it’s pretty easy (in my experience) to figure out who you’re sexually attracted to. Nobody has to tell you.

Such a cool show! I discovered it via another comment a year or two ago(maybe yours? If so, thanks!). Hopefully I can get my daughter to watch it eventually without resorting to some Ludovico-style shenanigans.

I agree that it’s only really the low-information undecided voters who will be swayed by a bad debate performance. Happily, we still have 5 months until the election, and I doubt that many people will be thinking about this by the time they get to the ballot box.
- Comment on Thanks, Google 5 months ago:
I used to live in GA, and there was a one-way street that google maps was constantly telling me to turn the wrong direction onto. It really bugs me that I switched to Waze because it was better than google maps, then google just bought them. Long past time to bring antitrust suits against big tech. At least we have an FTC chair at the moment who’s trying to make some progress.

Sorry to take so long to respond! It’s a novel set in a plausible near-future in which existing power structures have been fragmented by the effects of climate change. It follows a handful of disparate characters in the western US, and talks a lot about the water politics of the Colorado river. It’s very well-written (claims random internet guy, but hey—you asked!). Can also recommend The Windup Girl by the same author. Same eco-dystopian timeline, set in Thailand. Delves more into issues surrounding AI and genetic engineering.

That sounds interesting. It looks like you’re right, though; I couldn’t find an English translation, at any rate. Luckily, the search reminded me how much I loved The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi, and now I’m planning to hit the bookstore when it opens.

I had trouble with Nick Mohammed’s redemption arc on Ted Lasso, because he had sold me too well on his heel-turn. He’s super charming on Taskmaster, though!

Sounds like a great memory! Reminds me of watching Cheaper by the Dozen while the mortars walked toward us. Highly recommend watching Sorcerer, if you’re in the mood for some nitro-fueled tension.

For a really fun prank, coerce your friends into driving truckfuls of nitroglycerin hundreds of miles down a dodgy road through the jungle.

Sure! Never argued otherwise.

I think that the therapist(s) in this case would have to be AI. The person could be in their own little simulation, experiencing a reality tailored to addressing whatever psychological problems they might have. It’s all science fiction, anyhow. There’s no theoretical, let alone practical basis for this technology afaik.
- Comment on Progress! 8 months ago:
I mean, setting aside the danger inherent in creating demi-god wizards, there’s no reason they couldn’t do both.

Theoretically, if you had such technology, maybe you could use it to rehabilitate instead of punish. Being able to undergo months or years of therapy in a matter of hours could be extremely beneficial.
- Comment on space 8 months ago:
That’s what bugged me about this meme: as @Turun@feddit.de points out above, you’d have to travel billions of years into the past in order to wind up that far away. Nobody using a time machine would have any reason to do that, unless it was part of some fiendish plot against humanity, à la the Temporal Cold War from Star Trek: Enterprise. We should all demand more accuracy in our science memes.

To supplement the other answer here, Lemmy is home to a (relatively) large community of people who LARP as leftists. They claim exclusive access to the moral high ground, while uncritically parrotting state propaganda from Russia, China, the DPRK, and anyone else who appears to stand against western hegemony. Their sole creed is that the USA is the Great Satan, and obviously anyone who opposes Satan should be heeded. Tribal dipshits that rarely argue in good faith; in behavior, not dissimilar to former residents of r/the_donald.

Thank you for the correction, I remember reading about the Epic exclusivity now. I look forward to picking it up when it goes on sale! Such is my way. I knew there was a solid Star Trek Stellaris scene, but I’m just a dabbler in 4x games. My favorite Trek games are probably A Final Unity and the Interplay TOS adventures from 30 years ago.
- Comment on Star Trek: Infinite Ends Development – Trek Central 8 months ago:
I don’t think a 4x strategy game is the best approach to the franchise. What’s more, this game used the Stellaris engine, and there’s already an excellent, total-conversion Star Trek mod for Stellaris.
I’d love to see a Trek game by a competent adventure dev like Wadget Eye. Hopefully Resurgence will be good, but I’ll not be holding my breath; most recent Trek games have been low quality cash-grabs, bulging with microtransactions.
- Comment on What horrible errors are people like you guilty of? 8 months ago:
But seriously. I’ve seen a thousand conversations where everybody bitches about some person or people.
In a number of your comments, you’ve said things like “you people are all the same.” What group of people are you talking about? Is your question directed at them (us?), or a separate group? All your statements and questions are vague and reductive, to the point that no one has any idea what you’re getting at.

That part didn’t make sense to me, either, but my brain kind of elided it until I saw these comments. You’re right, it’s gotta be a genie that was created by a wish with a monkey’s paw. That brings up another question: do monkeys even have paws? A quick search indicates that they have, as I suspected, hands and feet! I blame W.W. Jacobs for this. Did the guy ever even see a monkey? I’m finding this hard to establish.
Further bulletins as events warrant.
- Comment on New Star Trek Movie Director Is A Fan And Directed The ‘Black Mirror’ Trek Episode “USS Callister” 11 months ago:
Honestly, that aspect of DS9 did put me off when it first aired, but in my defense I was a kid. I don’t think I got around to watching the whole series until sometime in my 30’s. I also think my JLP-lovin’ kid self thought it was total bullshit that Sisko held Picard responsible for the crimes of Locutus.
- Comment on New Star Trek Movie Director Is A Fan And Directed The ‘Black Mirror’ Trek Episode “USS Callister” 11 months ago:
I share your dismay w/r/t the ‘origin story’ trope, and started typing a much more cynical comment. But it’s not like you can’t tell a good story within those parameters. Plenty of good prequels exist. And lots of people were not big fans of Picard’s efforts to advance the timeline.
The determining factor for me will be the quality of the writing. I haven’t seen this Black Mirror episode, but I’ll check it out.
- Comment on 4202 g 11 months ago:
Ok, but for real, though? Actually, that’s a good idea. Factory chicken farms are already grotesque, but if we bring in Cronenberg and the ghost of H.R. Giger to design these monstrosities, it’ll put people off eating it entirely.
Not a veggo for the record; I just feel like I probably should be.
- Comment on Netflix Just Saved The Most Underrated Star Trek Show — Creators Tease What's Next 11 months ago:
As someone who despised Discovery, and avoided Picard, I’d recommend checking out SNW at a minimum. Lower Decks is also great, but I get it if the jokes and aesthetics don’t appeal to you. SNW ain’t perfect, but it’s well worth watching. Definitely on par with older Trek shows.
I get the burnout and the alienation, I’ve felt the same. But I think you’re doing yourself a disservice by letting Disco and Picard put you off of all the new shows. Anyhow, good luck 🖖!
