Building a neighborhood like this in North America would cause a civil war

Stressed watching this waiting for a horrible outcome and very relieved it was just a nice video of a pleasant urban environment. Phew!

Why do the trams have turn signals?

Safety

Because they drive on the same road as cars.

What cars? I see lots of bikes, a couple trams, and some pedestrians. No cars. Also trains famously don’t turn themselves. The points/switches turn them.

Not shown, the two homeless guys arguing over a bin bag of plastic bottles they want to cash in.
Bikes don’t stop for anyone in Amsterdam, the trams are great for getting around but as soon as you get off one you are in bike town and you need to pay attention to what’s going on around you.

Oh no, two homeless who are just maybe drunk instead of in a completely imaginary world on fent or other hard drug.
Like US cars are known to stop for you.

I want to visit

When I visited Amsterdam, it blew me away how bicycle-friendly it is. There are some cars on the road, but not many, and the laws heavily favor bicycling over driving.
In the U.S., bicyclists have to be very wary of cars and make room for them. It’s basically the opposite in Amsterdam.
