It is insane what the models are compiling.

Hold on tight to those beta tapes, memory sticks and minidiscs, Sony. Maybe they should have some kind of corporate history training for their leadership about fantasy formats that only exist for one company, but what do us silly consumers know? It’s sure obvious to everyone how hard Valve is losing by getting their platform (along with everyone’s largest game library) to run on anything with a GPU.
Stern@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
werent they already ‘ported’ to pc with rpcs3 and the like
NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 12 hours ago
It’s a more subtle but powerful difference, which is recompiling creates native code, which is more expansible and efficient (usually).
Emulation can appear similar but the code remains unchanged, so the system itself has to be emulated to run the non-native code, which (unless the emulator is very efficient) will usually be more limited and slower.
Artemis_Mystique@lemmy.ml 9 hours ago
if i remember correctly rpcs3 actually does recompilation on the fly
Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 11 hours ago
Emulation is nice if you go for an authentic experience. This is better: It allows a lot more easier modding, especially for older titles which then get widescreen support and improved graphics.
ampersandrew@lemmy.world 11 hours ago
What I’m hearing through the grapevine is that these quick and dirty executables are not conducive to any of those benefits, because it’s hardly different from just emulating it in the first place.
serpineslair@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
Rpcs3 never ran well for me anyway tbf.
David_Eight@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
I’ve had success with RPCS3 even on Steam Deck, seems to work way better on Linux from what I’ve seen. Its been greatly improved over the years.
thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 11 hours ago
I think the replies about “Emulation is not a port” misses your point. That’s why you put it in quotes as ‘ported’.
But besides that, some official “ports” from game companies are also just emulation. They do not port the game code, but they port the game over this way, in the sense of making it playable.

You know, I always assumed that we’d get a PS4 emulator eventually, thanks to the console running on a PC architecture. I just never thought to consider that we don’t actually need a PS4 emulator, because we can just make the games run natively on PC instead, thanks to the console running on a PC architecture.

I dont have time to play this game but I’ll jump in the swarm and boost y’all download speeds
mrfriki@lemmy.world 12 hours ago
This is huge indeed. Wondering if once it’s decompiled they can add functionality on top of it like native mouse support, ultra wide aspect ratios or HDR injection.
Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 11 hours ago
Aspect ratios are one of the first things that happen normally; this one has already been updated for ultrawide(beta) and 4K with up to 240 FPS. It has also received Keyboard support, background shader compilation, and FSR is currently being worked on. The current source even provides Discord Rich Presence.

Wow, that’s just perfect, thanks for the info!

Sony is getting free advertisements. Of course if those games are not complete shit and were praised only because of lack of anything better at that platform.
Arda@piefed.social 12 hours ago
Been trying to emulate it nice

This is like saying Sony is losing exclusives to PC because PS emulators exist lol.
Zahille7@lemmy.world 9 hours ago
I mean yes, that’s exactly what people are saying with this? And it’s kind of true?
It’s kinda like what Syndrome said: “when everyone’s special; no one will be.”
FreeLikeGNU@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
Yes it would be so terrible if everyone could be the best at whatever they wanted to be or even feel valued for whatever they excelled in.
thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 9 hours ago
Little offtopic incoming:
I never agreed with this statement. If everyone is special, then everyone is. In example in game Overwatch everyone has special abilities and are nothing alike anyone else. Everyone is a specialist in their own field. Everyone is special.
thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 11 hours ago
With that logic, Nintendo doesn’t have any exclusives too. Maybe besides Switch 2, but that console losing exclusives too.
