Rejoining the EU would mean allowing free flowing of EU citizens, just as it was before. I’m all for this, incidentally.

They suffer under the illusion that the UK is somehow better than all EU nations and should therefore have a stronger relationship as the dominant party. They sit there and imagine the UK saying to the continent:

Asset in partnership, absolutely, but there’s a sizable chunk of this country sees treating other nations as equals as “losing”.
