The death spiral is real. The reason moths (and all other flying insects) are attracted to lämps is because they use light for navigation. Often it’s not just nocturnal insects, but insects that think it’s daytime because of the light. So they will fly in circles under the lämp until they starve to death because they think they’re heading towards food.
It’s thought this is actually the main reason for the collapse of insect populations across the planet, coupled with excessive insecticide use in agriculture. We’ve created an incledibly dangerous habitat for almost every species onmthe planet.
