The word “twerking” is new, the move is not.

Yeah, but it is an appropriate question as white people didn’t really twerk until the name was created.

You would be incorrect and racist.

“nostupidquestions” and I asked a question and got downvoted to hard. Guess this place I have been interested in is not that different than reddit.

There is not much context of this question. Define “white people”, do you mean those of European ancestry, those living in Western cultures (if so, which ones?), etc. It’s ambiguous.

If you see other questions, they describe the problem and specify the details. If you ask “why do people do this thing” with no context, whatever that thing is, it will be disliked as it’s hard to answer.

If people do not agree with you, perhaps you are in the wrong. The Internet is cruel, but it is composed of people too you know? And you are one of those people, and you know many other people in your life, so treat people like proper people, even when it’s hidden internet people!

Forgive my American centrism, but what other culture would use the term “white” when discussing a group in relation to Black and Afro-Carribean cultural elements?

And how has this negatively affected your life?

Some folks observe the very special up/downvoting rules here. Other’s don’t.

I’ve seen somewhat similar responses to questions I’ve asked, so you aren’t alone. That said, your question is well within what this place is about. Also, this is Lemmy; downvotes really don’t matter as much as Reddit.

In the 1800s twerking meant to jerk or twist one’s rump into a gentleman’s frontal area, so probs a while bro

Likely mid 2000’s at the earliest. Southern rap was really the first popular genre to put the dance in music videos, which is where white people would have learned it.
