To be specific, I’m trying to find a multiplayer game to play that isn’t team-based or co-op, which most of them seem to be.
You can still find populated Quake 3 servers out there. That’s always fun, especially Instagib with the rail gun.

Xonotic is still a lot of fun
It is! Finding a game is kind of hit-and-miss nowadays, though.
Its hype has died out years ago, but Fall Guys is fun for a couple rounds here and there if you’re not in for some sweaty gameplay
Oh yeah, Takeshi’s Castle in videogame form looks pretty dope! But as you mentioned, the player count leaves something to be desired. Curiously, Stumble Guys, which seems to be just a blatant rip-off of Fall Guys, seems to be doing better. I wonder what that’s about.
My fiancée had a lot of fun playing a couple weeks ago and the games seemed populated enough. Didn’t take her too long to find a match and the lobbies were full too. YMMV depending on the server location, though - Europe here
You might want to be a little more specific, but theres Warsow which has FFA modes if you wanted a shooter
Hm, good point, thanks. Post edited.
EVE Online
Thanks for the mention, but I think I’ll pass on EVE. I know it fits all the criteria I mentioned, but that game is just so massively intimidating to me.
I was joking, but don’t be intimidated, they made progress in introducing players, and it really is a one-of-a-kind game if you want multiplayer.
Beyond All Reason regularly fills up FFA lobbies.

Fist Full of Frags still has plenty of active servers.

There’s a blast from the past. I played FoF on LAN parties years ago and it was pretty fun! I had no idea it still had servers going, will check it out, thanks! Will check out the Battle Royale scene, too. Embarrassingly, I have yet to try a single one.
