Earlier this year I was considering upgrading my desktop to 64GB, but didn’t want to upgrade straight from 32GB to 64GB because I was using DDR4. If I was gonna buy an upgrade I wanted it to be to DDR5, but that would have involved a processor and motherboard upgrade that would have cost almost $500 combined (including the RAM). Ultimately I decided against it because of the cost (I don’t actually need a processor upgrade) and figured I’d buy down the line when I needed to.
Now the RAM alone is the cost of the entire upgrade. Bonkers.

I bought 32gb RAM last year to get my desktop to 64gb for work but now I use a work provided laptop. Genuinely considering selling off 32gb of it.

I recently upgraded and have put a classified ad for 16gb of ddr4 (so-dimm), for what seemed a fair price. It didn’t even get a single fucking view.

Nobody wants to buy secondhand RAM. Too big of a risk that it won’t work

Well, they are flying on the second hand market where I live.
Also, I might be wrong, but RAM tends to just work or just fail, and there are 48 euros of return period in the platform I use.

I get that, but with the current prices I thought it might change if you’re on a budget.

What was your fair price?
Bourff@lemmy.world 20 hours ago
That’s where I might be wrong. I put them at 80€, a bit below the others ads for the same thing.

Sold 10 years old 8*2GB DDR 4 for 50 euros just a few days ago. They didn’t even ask, just straight buy in minutes of posting. I was expecting some negotiation and selling by 35-40.
The same kit I sold is now being purchased for 65 euros.

I am trying and failing to get any 16GB DDR4 for €35, so that checks out.
For now, say hello to OOM killer.
