I’m pretty sure Puss In Boots, originally from 1550 Europe, is completely unrelated to Zorro, which even plays in a colonial region that didn’t exist before 1800.
In everyway

The dreamworks Puss in Boots voice actor played Zorro in a live action movie (The Mask of Zorro).
They made Puss in Boots a parody of Zorro, as an elaborate joke.
It’s already funny, and gets even funnier as you realize it’s an actual Zorro actor playing a cat, doing a parody, of himself, as Zorro.

In this case, they’re related by being played by the same actor. This incarnation of Puss n Boots was definitely influenced by Antonio Banderas’ Zorro

Yeah admittedly I was originally pissed that they completely botched the original story of puss in boots.
But the character is just so good. Banderas was the perfect casting, and you can tell he loves the role. The upgrade won me over.

I got this joke backwards. Mask of Zorro came out when I was like, 10 so I didn’t see it until much later…after I’d seen Shrek 2. So throughout this live action Hollywood blockbuster I’m laughing that the main character sounds exactly like an orange cartoon cat.
