Idk the name for it,but this is a common vibe I see here in my US college town. It is a type of art student that doesn’t come from a rich background. I think the best name I think of off the top of my head would be something like “Post tumbler alternative” or “midwestern underground goth” ? Idk, the name doesn’t matter.
The point is, your people are out there and if you keep looking, you’ll find your tribe eventually.

usually subcultures form around music, games, movies … sounds like you found yours already? the festivals you go to certainly attract people you can connect with, no?

I actually have never been to a festival even though I really want to!

sorry missread that.
but yeah … one of the most embarassing thought i ever had was, “i wanna be a goth”. at a point at which i was already pretty much integrated in my local community of sorrows. i wanted to match my cool new friends. for the wrong reason.
i am embarassed of this bc at the time i thought it would be important to belong to group and be good at that. i was a little in love with the clichees.
do what you genuinly like and find people who you can share with. that’s all there is about subcultures. the rest follows. people who hang out a lot tend to converge in style and habit.

They just want a label they can claim.
They’re not asking for a subculture, they’re asking for a descriptor to feel unique.
Typical teenager stuff

Subcultures are so dumb, just be yourself mate. If you’re unhappy with yourself, change something about it, if you’re not, who cares? You can do anything regardless of the way you present yourself optically.

When it comes to this type of things there are two camps or scenarios:
- You give yourself a label and define it through your actions. “I’m Emo, because I said so”. This is how many subcultures name themselves, social groups of the same interest give themselves a descriptor and run with it. Usually around a shared taste in music genre.
A. You do you spontaneously, then other people give you a label to describe you. Then groups usually adopt the name and run with it. A lot of labels come from this scenario as well.
The point is that both scenarios also interact and dialogue. Some people redefine the label through their actions, usually from terms that started as derogatory insults and are then appropriated by the in group then redefined as an identity. Sometimes self chosen labels are then reinterpreted by the public and resignified by the out group.
It’s all very fluid and always changing. Don’t fret too much over it. Whatever label you define yourself or get assigned to today might as well mean nothing in a couple of years because culture is alive and constantly moving.

Ignore trying to identify and fit into some niche subculture. Instead, just make friends based on your interests. Let any subculture participation emerge naturally. There is no need to granularly define and name and restrict yourself to one thing or social group and this can actually be arbitrarily limiting and divisive.
For example, find some friends to safely go to music events with. Sounds like that’s something you’d like to do.

your subculture is you. it is the best subculture to have.
