I hear the argument that people hate pigeons with a passion due to things like disease, but I don’t give a fuck. It’s not like they asked for it and it’s not like they’re aware of it. They’re just hanging out being birds. Let them be!

Thing is, as long as you don’t have an impaired immune system or stand in an unventilated room full if pigeon feces you’ll be fine.

I hate pigeons though, not gonna lie. “Rats of the air” as we call them.

Happy about airborne rats?

So you believe state propaganda that birds aren’t spying drones but in fact rats (which are mammals btw)?

Well, more metaphorically and limited to densely populated areas. I mean, rural pigeons are great!
But their city dwelling cousins are mostly poor beasts, malnutritioned, disease plaqued, often invalid: half blind, missing leg, barely enough feathers to fly even short distances.
On top of that a public health issue. So the rat comparison mostly holds, I am afraid…

Who are you, a cat?
Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
No, I am the guy that just a few weeks ago got told that he can’t open the window of the joint staircases anymore to let out the stale summer heat, because then the pigeons would fly in.
I am the guy that can’t use the easternmost quarter of his balcony any more because it is constantly covered under shit from the pigeon-meeting-place above.
I am the guy whose car is covered in off-colour smudges because the pidgeon-piss from the tree above has corroded the paint.I am pretty sure that most of the people here that like pidgeons would think completely different when they had to live with them in close quarters and have their quality of live noticeably reduced.
Other birds are great, though! We have sparrows, tits, blackbirds, dozens of other types. All great!
Occasionally a pair of crows is visiting. Those are impressive birds! Intelligent as fuck, don’t give a shit but stay out of your way if you don’t want to interact. And, double Bingo: the pigeons don’t like them!

Boooooo they are FAR cooler and majestic than rodents
Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
So the more a shame that most times we leave them to their grim fate in the urban hell we brought them to with us!

Rats > pigeons (unironically)

Truly, if you’re feeling miserable and even suicidal - I know this sounds cliche, but please try going for a walk outside, ideally in a wooded area.
I understand this sounds like “touch grass”, but seriously, try it out.

I second this. It doesn’t solve anything, but your mind finds better things to do. Bonus points if someone aporoaches you. There were countless people who just asked me for directions or the time on the way to the shop, and just exchanging these few words made me feel human again.

The birds are in misery. I don’t think they sing, they just screetch in pain.

Beautiful birds with an incredible history, heartbreaking how they were completely abandoned when faster communication was invented
Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
Given the fact that they mainly were a food source instead of noble mail carriers, perhaps having been abandoned in reality has not been that bad a fate…
Broadfern@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Exactly.
They’re my favorite birds, personally. I’ve never quite experienced a calm like when feeding a bunch of pigeons in the middle of a city and they were just grateful, content, and friendly.
Plus the way they bob their heads when they walk is cute lol.
lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 months ago
So that’s why they live on the street, I see.
Due to AI this might be our fate soon. Let’s see who feeds us bread crumbles and who doesn’t
