  This makes me think about the TNG episode where they originally tried to backdoor pilot a Starfleet Academy series — it was the one where Wesley and his cohorts break the rules flying shuttles during some exhibition and someone gets hurt (and they lie about it). I have to wonder how that series would have turned out if it had been picked up.
