Have we as users already given up on self-curation via blocks and filters? It seems an essential consideration for the design of this platform.
The recent wave of posts add nothing new to the discussion that I can tell. Maybe we need a sidebar link to help remind people of the instance federation principles, and perhaps help guide them toward use of the features Lemmy provides?
I appreciate the agnosticism. Preserving federation should never be considered as indicative of any position held by the instance, it’s just what’s best for the network.
I don’t have much to add to the local community but have been really pleased that I’m able to interact with most other instances from this one and plan to donate when I can.

I’m a bit late to this discussion, but I needed to get my first taste of political censorship on Lemmy first.
My experience was with the “hexbear.net” instance (former Chapo’s Trap House subreddit) which is currently federated with “lemm.ee”.
It shows up nicely in the feed, but if you go there to discuss, you get banned in a moment for stating commonly accepted facts because you’re “reactionary” - Wikipedia is also reactionary, as well as mainstream news - while users praising dictatorial regimes get upvoted and aren’t getting moderated.
Complete echo chamber. At such servers, there’s also no obvious recourse to get a ban or deletion reversed.
I would avoid federation with such places.

So what’s your stance on CSAM? Free speech absolutism says even illegal content shouldn’t be taken down - that’s what absolutism means.

I think this is a great way to go about things. Thanks for all of your work!

Ia there any list of blocked communities?

Thanks, I need to change accounts anyway and I will move to lemm.ee I think :) The policy sounds good to me.

Nice policy. I chose shitjustworks because I saw here github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances that it has fewer blocks than lemm.ee.

You make a good case for migrating here. Is there a list of defederated instances somewhere?

lemm.ee/instances …/instances also works for any other instance you might want to check out.
