Okay, I had a look. In the “search” tab (4th one) there should be an “Explore” button at the bottom that should allow you to do so.
It looks like this on the website: vger.app/search/explore

On Voyager, the communities are shown above the votes counts, here !buyeuropean@feddit.uk for instance. You can then use the three dots menu to click on the community’s name to visit it.
!communitypromo@lemmy.ca can help to discover communities.

To upload pictures for other uses cases than community banner and icon, you can use postimages.org
