I’ve never actually had a chiko roll. Is that horribly un-Australian of me? I don’t think I’ve ever had one of those fish shop dim sims either, they always look a bit gross to me.

I bought a box of chiko rolls on Friday. They’re not actually really different at all to the ones you get at fish and chippies
I tried a medium (not deep) fry in a pan on the stove, as well as air fryer. My determination is that depe fried is probably the best, but not that much better than the air fryer. I don’t feel comfortable enough using such an exorbitant amount of oil to actually deep fry them, and don’t have the proper equipment (so it’d just be over the stove), so no comparison there
My attempt at frying them in a shallow/medium amount of oil wasn’t good because it didn’t cook evenly around. I ended up burning one side (albeit that’s just cause I’m inexperienced), and couldn’t fry the sides very well, because they’re slightly longer and flatter on one side than the other despite being cylinders

Probably. I think they’re kinda dying off these days though. I’ve been in 6 fish and chips shops so far that said they didn’t do them anymore. Admittedly though, 2 of those were weird hipster ones bragging about everything being low sodium and didn’t even do potato cakes

I fucking hate those places. Can’t do a decent fryup for shit and charge excessively for it

Yep. Hipster cafes are usually okay, the best coffee I’ve ever had came out of a hipster cafe (though they did have pricing to match). Hipster fish and chippies though, hell nah. I don’t want low sodium chips with msg free chicken salt! I want the filthiest, most unhealthy, deepest fried chips with the most artery clogging chicken salt you’ll give me!

Were they frozen? You could try microwaving them first, then paint them with some vegetable oil, then airfry them.

Sure are
The air fryer is more than fine though

I also feel weird that I like them.

I remember their ad in the fish n chip shop with a leather bikini girl on a harleyesque chopper holding the chicko roll like a cock she was about to suck. Imma say 1987. Even then as a kid I remember thinking why would you advertise a product like that.

Ah yes, the
Chiko Chick

She was replaced in 2008. From the Wikipedia page: “In 2008, the company began a nationwide search for the new “Chiko Chick”, hoping to downplay the traditionally raunchy look in favour of a more wholesome “girl next door” image.”
She was replaced by Annette Melton who played Regina DeFrancisco in Deadly Women
