There is reason for it. Back in the days where travelling to a polling place was still a major event politicians used to ply people with food and alcohol to buy their votes. It often got quite out of control and was seen as a threat to democracy.

They haven’t ever had it. Current system is more or less an oligarchy, it’s just called democracy so as not to scare people.
