It’s weird, but also more specific. You can give someone a haircut, give someone guff, give someone herpes, but you wouldn’t say “gifted” in those contexts.

“He was given 50 bananas as a gift” is the correct way to say it
The “gifted” bit is just the magical English language and its ability to verbify anything into a verb

Gift has been used as a verb for the entire history of Modern English. Unless you are speaking Middle English, gift is equally correct.
