Catholics is pretty much the only major Christian denomination that leans left/Democrat in the US. I can’t think of a recent pope that advocated or implicitly encouraged a vote for Republicans.

rynzcycle@kbin.social 10 months agoUnfortunately I do, much of my extended family is what I call consistent Catholic. They oppose the death sentence, are in favour of funding good education and social programs, and yet, somehow every election they vote R because the pope tells them too. The only silver linings are that I think most of them abstained rather than vote for Trump and that they all live in a hard Red state anyway so they probably won't have much impact. Still drives me crazy though.

US Catholic leadership is frequently right-wing and in conflict with Rome. Especially with the recent Pope telling them to quit the hateful rhetoric.

Why would the pope comment on American politics? Let alone ne endorse a party?
And like someone else already said, the American leadership of the Catholic Church is really rightwing.

There is a sizable anti-Catholic sentiment in the US. Many of the early colonizers came here to escape Catholicism. Even the KKK was anti-Catholic in addition to being super racist.

Many of the early colonizers came here to escape Catholicism
Not even a little bit…
They were religious extremists mad that the dominant European sects of Christianity wouldn’t force everyone to follow their more rigid rules.
The only “persecution” they escaped was not being able to force their rules on everyone else. So they came here where they could be a majority, and 200 some years later America is still more repressed because of it.
You’re repeating the fairytale version kids get taught in elementary, not what happened

An example of a political view with an implicit recommendation.
Up to you to decide if denouncement of fascism is applicable to American politics or not.

That’s not about a specific country…
Which was my whole point, the pope is much larger than any one leader.
It’s like blaming Biden for Kentuckys education issues, that’s just not on his plate because he’s in charge of the entire country, their are 100s of people in between them.

Episcopalians, despite often being called the Republican party at prayer, often lean pretty left actually.

The Pope? Pope Francis is more “leftist” than some American leftist! Why do they feel that he would tell them to vote Republican? I don’t know how American Catholics perceive the church, I just hear a lot about evangelicals in the US
