I’m a bit sad about David Jones collapsing. When I was spending lots of time in the city I used to love walking through there. The spring flower displays were spectacular. Online shopping has probably contributed, plus a hefty dose of mismanagement and value extraction by private equity. I still prefer in person shopping, being able to see what I’m buying and trying on. I think there still could be a place for them, but unlikely a buyer/investor will be found. RIP to an era.

I have hated the David Jones city store ever since I turned around too fast and ran slap bang face on into a mirror on a column. That was in the early 2000s and I’ve never been in the store since.
I miss Buckley & Nunns. Their ecclesiastical department was a wonder - all the little old lades embroidering church vestments, stacked mitres and dog collars on shelves and more black floor length gowns than you could shake a stick at. I never knew about it until my then employer required some repairs to his legal wig - more repairs that I could do with glue and some hairs salvaged from my horse’s tail. Cos they also did repairs to legal and mayoral ceremonial garments too. I sorta wonder where church vestments come from nowadays.

There are shops that will do it. They sell the vestments, the incense, all the silverware. Everything you need to fit out a church

Must have been interesting to see. It’s not something I’ve ever thought about, but I guess those items must come from somewhere!
