Volunteer work is an amazing way to break cycles of isolation and loneliness. You have a shared common goal with other volunteers and you are making a collective effort to improve the lives of those less fortunate than you. Even if you walk away without having met the love of your life or whatever, at least you can feel good knowing that you helped make the world a better place and got to meet some cool, likeminded people.

Case in point: My dad got into habitat for humanity because he loves Jimmy Carter but the local group was a bunch of catty bitches so he quit for local government. (Which also sucks but for different reasons.)

Volunteer work backfires for a lot of people when they work at like food pantries though. You get a huge amount of entitled rude assholes

¯_(ツ)_/¯ I can’t really speak to that. I volunteer with local mutual aid orgs because it more directly and sustainably impacts the local community.

It’s hard reconciling the fact you are being generous (even indirectly) and the fact that poor people with fucked up lives may be a bit too busy with their shitty lives to show gratefulness.
Like animals biting you when you rescue them, it’s hard to understand, no doubt.

The other volunteers bite you too.

That’s just humans grasping the slightest bit of authority and going crazy.

Sad but yeah, I worked for a few years in charity and heard similar stories. I was IT so didn’t have to deal with them directly, thankfully.
