Long- and short-term disability need regulation. Companies cut funding to their own employees at times when it hurts the most while also throwing them to the health insurance vultures.
It sends the message fuck you, find your own way or die.

The funny part is that the second you actually need disability coverage, the companies are all too happy to throw you over to the government for that as fast as they can.

It does in the US too. I’m not sure what the previous commenter is talking about with companies cutting off funds. No company I’ve ever worked for paid workers for disability time. They throw you over to the government for that at the first opportunity, though they may be involved to the extent of validating yes this person works here, etc.
The issue in the OP is the amount paid, if we actually read it. Of course all the comments are just going in the usual directions of “fuck capitalism / corporations / the USA” and sadly nothings going to change that.

I believe they are talking about company-sponsored short term and long term disability, STD and LTD. LTD commonly covers a percentage of your wages… my companies provides 60% with an upper limit.
Government provided disability you have to qualify for and requires an application process. It doesn’t provide much money either, which is why companies often have LTD benefit plans a person can enroll in.
