  The company that now owns SteamDB has this bolded on their front page:

  We acquire. We amplify. We conquer.

  It can’t really get more dystopian than that.

  NexusMods themselves went to absolute shit, requiring an account for stuff like downloading mods, and getting a premium subscription for basic features like “Instant downloads”, “Viewing more mods per page”, and “The ability to choose a preferred download server”.

  SteamDB used to provide a completely free (in price) service, with no strings attached. This was by far the most common usecase of the service. Seeing the history of NexusMods and the company that owns it, this will change. The moment SteamDB requires an account for previously public info, or even a premium subscription, is the moment the service becomes unusable for most. Effectively, SteamDB is marked for death.

      Not sure why they’re being upvoted but you’re right. I’ve been using nexus since the skyrim days and it’s always had tiered downloads, account requirement and limited mods/page. Just about the only changes I’ve seen are the “refreshed” layout and the abundance of ads (which I have admittedly used an adblock for)

    I don’t remember a time when this wasn’t the case. Download servers are expensive.

  Because they got bought out by venture capital. Even if they’re not so bad currently, they’re eventually going to want a return on their “investment,” and that return is going to come at the expense of the users.

  The claim/fear that Nexus will remove concurrent player counts is literally the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard.

  The real reason NexusMods acquiring SteamDB is concerning is because, as stated in their announcement, they’re dedicating an entire team with more resources to keeping it running. This used to be done by one person + donations. So, ads, sponsors, affiliate schemes, and more anti-user plans are being cooked up to make it sustainable.

  It’s a valid concern. Overblown but valid.

  To me, it’s a mixture of things:

  1. I want my hosting sites to not be opinionated, think AO3. Is there shit on it that I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole? Yes. Is it fine? Also yes.

  Removing “bigoted mods” is just saying “we decide what you can download”, and I can make that determination for myself, as a grown ass adult.

  2. Their monetisation is shit, and they’re very heavyhanded about it

  3. Their user-facing behaviour is smug and condescending, they act like modding exists because of them and not the other way around.

      Lemmy is not a hosting site, it’s a forum, it’s fundamentally different.

      I disagree with plenty of ideas, but I also reject the notion that someone should be barred from publishing them, because that tool will inevitably be used against those same people when the pendulum swings.

      To wit, those mods didn’t stop existing, they were just hosted elsewhere, because a hosting site is not social media, it’s not a place of dialogue or community, it’s a utility.

        But there are realistically always some rules on what kinds of hosted content is allowed on a page. Open racism/transphobia are, I’m guessing, not allowed. Why is this a step too far compared to other cases that go beyond legal limits?

        It’s also important to note that 1) they weren’t barred from publishing the mod, and 2) they’re totally okay with using said tool in lots of cases where it was never used before - why would they suddenly care about it?
