Wanna guess how many plants are wasted to feed animals, only for humans to eat them?
Comment on IT'S TIME!

A lot of plants don’t want to be eaten either. Tough shit, I am hungry.

Plants don’t want to be eaten. Plants don’t want to be eaten. Plants don’t want to be eaten. Plants don’t want to be eaten. Plants don’t want to be eaten. Plants don’t want to be eaten. Plants don’t want to be eaten.
theolodis@feddit.org 1 month ago
To be completely fair, some plants actually produce fruits with the intent of them being eaten, because that’s their way of Zoochorie/Hemerochorie

fun fact: we kill between 1 and 3 TRILLION animals a year for food and textiles.
Wait, that’s not a fun fact!
some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 1 month ago
That’s it? I was hoping to see at least 10 trillion animals killed this year…
hans@feddit.org 1 month ago
we? I don’t. stop it.
aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
Yeah, I used the royal we.
Gladaed@feddit.org 1 month ago
Not all animals are the same. Killing an endangered dolphin weighs much different to eating a mussel.
theolodis@feddit.org 1 month ago
So you’d recommend only eating animals until they are endangered and then eating other animals until they are no longer? Is that what you want to express?
Or are you arguing that some animals are more sentient than others (e.g. mammals vs mussels), and we should switch to eating snails and mussels only, because of that?
Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Well you should probably stop eating fish then, because trawling absolutely does kill dolphins. Its called by-catch.
hans@feddit.org 1 month ago
none. not really. if we are using it, it’s not wasted, and much of what we feed livestock is plants or parts of plants that people can’t or won’t eat

According to the Soy bean producers of North Carolina, the soymeal is a by product of the soy oil production, where a small portion is used for Tofu and Soy milk and the majority becomes animal feed: ncsoy.org/media-resources/uses-of-soybeans/
So all of the soy protein given to animals would indeed be digestible by humans.
Now it might be true that a lot of people don’t want to eat Tofu Tempe and Soy milk, but we could as well plant any other vegetable instead of Soy beans, and who could resist some delicious Brussel sprouts for example???
hans@feddit.org 1 month ago
if we don’t plant soybeans, we won’t get soybean oil
Artemis_Mystique@lemmy.ml 1 month ago
Plants that humans wouldnt be able to digest efficiently anyway, unlesss you are talking about the more bourgeois meats
theolodis@feddit.org 1 month ago
Like soy and corn, which famously can’t be digested by humans.
x4740N@lemmy.world 1 month ago
You do realise it’s waste product not suitable for human consumption
For example waste spy product from the production of your soy milk which also uses a ton of water and drives deforestation
The farms also kill farm pests with use of farming machines, pesticides and shotguns
hans@feddit.org 1 month ago
people don’t want to eat field corn, but the soy that is given to livestock is mostly the waste product from pressing soybeans for oil
x4740N@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Wanna know how many of those plants are waste product only and plants only suitable for animal consumption
Do you see a human eating hay
Cut the greenwashing crap
Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Is hay the only thing that can grow on that land? Could we grow food humans like instead?
You do need to think things through a bit more than that.
markovs_gun@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Some do, actually. Most plants that taste good basically rely on being eaten as part of their reproductive cycle.
Gladaed@feddit.org 1 month ago
In particular cultivars. So do pigs.
Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 1 month ago
Mostly berries sure but we eat a lot more plants than that.
MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Fuck plants! I’ll eat 'em all!

Vegan Bullshit Bingo #22
Plants have feelings too
Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 1 month ago
What part of “Tough shit, I am hungry” made you think I care about the desires of the plant?
madjo@feddit.nl 1 month ago
Plants communicate.
Those tears you shed when cutting onions is because of a defence mechanism of the onion, the scent you smell when cutting grass is another.
We also know that fungi and trees communicate with eachother as well. They even help eachother gain nutrients.
Teppichbrand@feddit.org 1 month ago
Yeah, agreed. Life wants to live. Pain and fear is something animals feel so they can get away from potential harm. If you’re immobile like a plant, it doesn’t make sense to feel pain. Plus you don’t have a brain nor a central nervous system. 70% of global crops are fed to animals. Stop eating animals and grow forests there, to make our planet healthier.
x4740N@lemmy.world 1 month ago
More greenwashing
I’m surprised how much lemmy lets vegans get away with the greenwashing stuff
hans@feddit.org 1 month ago
no, they’re not. why would you lie about something so easy to find the truth?
SippyCup@lemmy.ml 1 month ago
It’s closer to 30%.
About 80% of the biomass of the food grown for human consumption is fed to livestock as well. That may be where you’re getting that number? That’s being insanely generous. What we’re talking about is like, corn stalks, squash vines, that kind of shit. The parts of the plants humans cannot physically eat but none the less must produce to feed ourselves.
I’m sure the irony of your bullshit bingo card is completely lost on you but you haven’t said anything that strictly speaking could be interpreted as true in this thread.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 month ago
That doesn’t mean they’re sentient though, those are just chemical signals
hans@feddit.org 1 month ago
to the extent that they don’t understand that they themselves might die, plants don’t want too be eaten any more than they want to keep living. the same is true for animals
Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
Not true at all, many animals share the same emotions as humans, who are animals themselves.
hans@feddit.org 1 month ago
they may have emotions, but this doesn’t entail that they understand personal mortality.
