Shrimp, lobsters, and crabs are kinds of bugs.
andros_rex@lemmy.world â¨3⊠â¨days⊠ago
Arthropods, not bugs.
NewSocialWhoDis@lemm.ee â¨3⊠â¨days⊠ago
Does âbugsâ have a scientific meaning? I was assuming it was a laymanâs term that I could abuse.
aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone â¨3⊠â¨days⊠ago
weird how people will eat lobsters and crabs, but wonât eat grasshoppers and ants.
NewSocialWhoDis@lemm.ee â¨3⊠â¨days⊠ago
Not sure what your definition of people is, but Mexicans, Ugandan, and Koreans all eat grasshoppers (and probably others). I know crickets are eaten in Southeast Asia.
Ants seem too tiny to try to eat, but a Google search reveals they are eaten in South America and Southeast Asia.

fun fact: animals, exluding humans, kill about 1 MILLION of us humans a year, most of which are not sea animals.
barf@vegantheoryclub.org â¨5⊠â¨days⊠ago
Wow thatâs 0.0000003% as much, which is conveniently exactly the same ratio as my balls to your mom.

Itâs also accounted for almost 100% by mosquitos, specifically the diseases they carryâŚso not really the mosquitos at all. Quick searching shows snakes following mosquitos with 100,000 deaths caused per year. In any case, the scale is prodigiously unbalanced. Human animals kill trillions of non-human animals, almost entirely for their own pleasure. Non-human animals kill a few hundred thousand human animals (or a bit over a million if you count mosquito-borne disease) in self defense or by accident.

Weird mathematical fact about that,
That works out to almost exactly every person on Earth killing exactly one animal every day.
Brandonazz@lemmy.world â¨4⊠â¨days⊠ago
Actually very interesting, I wonder if this ratio holds up throughout history.
Lyrl@lemm.ee â¨3⊠â¨days⊠ago
I guess people eating a basket of shrimp are balanced out by people sharing one cow with several hundred others.
BussyCat@lemmy.world â¨5⊠â¨days⊠ago
Isnât like more than half that number diseases like malaria spread through mosquitoes
dogs0n@sh.itjust.works â¨4⊠â¨days⊠ago
Yeah, the numbers are different everywhere, but mosquitoes cause at least 50% of that million.

Fun Fact: I found the hunter

Next fun fact: Its more likely to get killed by a coconut dropping onto your head than to die in a shark attack.
