Parties and what they represent evolve over time. America is going through a rapid evolution currently.
Since the end of the Cold War America has pursued or engaged in free trade and Neo Liberalism and the War on Terror.
The result is there are significant sections of the populace that feel left behind by our economy as wealth inequality builds. They see their jobs going over seas and an ineffectual government that has failed at protecting them economically and has failed in the War on Terror. Add to it a powerful propaganda machine in the form of our news and social media and it is a recipe for change… What that change will end up shaping into may not be the future you want.
This is the backlash. After the Democratic establishment has ignored unions and the working man. Leaving them open to the populist out reach of Donald Trump.
Never mind that Trump will never deliver any of what he promised. The fact is he now has the power and is using it to break up the system that has been in place since WW2. Which benefits a small number of oligarchs who want to cement their power over the US.
I suspect we will see a shift in the next mid-term election (if it takes place) and a realignment of the Democratic Party toward populism. We as a people have to figure out how to fight corporate propaganda and their hegemony over social media.
That is if Trump doesn’t kill our Democracy first.
- Comment on dear republicans, what's the point of alienating every single ally of the US? 3 weeks ago:
I cashed out in November.
Its painfully obvious to anyone who can do math that Trumps policy’s would destabilize an already weakening market.
- Comment on dear republicans, what's the point of alienating every single ally of the US? 3 weeks ago:
Buffet has a long history of stockpiling cash when the market becomes far too speculative. He’s also flat out said millionaires and billionaires aren’t taxed fairly compared to the working class.
I think Trump is trying to appeal to blue collar workers who have seen their jobs disappear. Tariffs are his ham fisted way of trying to appeal to them.
Trump is a fool though. It isn’t the 60s anymore and manufacturing won’t work in the US without inputs from Canada and Mexico.
- Comment on Is anyone else getting a bit of schadenfreude from the news each day? 4 weeks ago:
Trump’s popularity is lower than any President at this point in their presidency. I think there are a lot of “moderates” and uninformed voters who are starting to regret their choice.
Once he starts axing Medicare/medicare and going after social security and other popular programs it is only going to get worse.
Just remember there will be roughly 20 to 30 percent who are hard core MAGA who will never change their minds no matter how bad it gets.
- Comment on Why Are People Surprised When Trump Actually Follows Through? 4 weeks ago:
Give it 30 to 60 days and the Trump Presidency will collapse.
He’s pissing off too many people. He has the lowest approval rating at this point in his Presidency. He has MAGA stalwarts like the New York Post running front page articles against his dealings with Russia.
The stock market is starting to show cracks because of his malfeasance on tariffs and his treatment of allies.
He’s going after the FBI, CIA, and every other alphabet agency. Say what you want about them, they are filled with people who now fear for their jobs in a way they have never had to. That is not how a large agency runs long term.
Finally they need to pass a budget and raise the debt ceiling. All things Republicans have proven incapable of on their own. At some point they will need to come and ask the Democrats for help in doing this or the government will default on the Republicans watch. At that point it will be game over. Trump will look weak and impotent.
I don’t think Trump will have taken over enough of the government to overcome all of these challenges and hold onto power on his own.
If he slows down and consolidates power maybe there will be a different outcome. But that’s not what project 2025 outlines. They want to break everything in the first 100 days. Hopefully he will have broken his own base in the process.
- Comment on How is the Stock Market keeping it's value after *points to everything*? 5 weeks ago:
This is the pump before the dump. Institutional investors are slowly exiting and retail investors are making up most of the volume.
We were due for a correction or crash but Biden and the Fed held it off long enough for the election. There is a lot of money sitting on the sidelines waiting to grab assets, housing etc on the cheap.
Grifters like Trump can’t wait to get it started. In every crisis there is opportunity what Trump does with this crisis will likely reshape our government.

FDIC insured up to $250,000 per account. So it’s mainly the little guys who enjoy the protection. FDIC did make all accounts even those over $260,000 whole.
But yes if the Orange Baboon and Electric Hitler decide to fuck with the FDIC I would pull the bulk of my funds and look for offshore safe havens.
- Comment on Is there any way our of the US political spiral? 2 months ago:
Elite centrists have dominated the Democratic party since Clinton. They love to take a “responsible” center left position and try to grab centrists. Unions, minorities and people on the left have no recourse but to continue to vote for them because the Republicans were soo much worse.
Trump’s super power has always been his ability to say anything it takes to get votes yet deliver very little. Because of this he can say appealing things to unions and minorities who have been disenfranchised which undermines Democrats.
The generation of boomers who have lead the Democratic Party since Clinton is literally dying out. These next few election cycles are going to be interesting as the next generation of Xers and Millennials have a different opinion of government and are much more militant and vocal.

People would kill themselves by over consuming it.
Panera bread had a charged lemonade energy drink and two people died.

The 14th amendment is very clear on this, and has been upheld by the Supreme Court on many occasions.
Unless you are the child of a a diplomat or an invading soldier you are awarded citizenship if you are born under the jurisdiction of a state I.E. US soil. Illegal immigrants are still under US jurisdiction and their children are awarded citizenship as a result.
- Comment on [deleted] 2 months ago:
Trump is doing away with birthright citizenship which is enshrined in the 14th amendment. “Illegal” is whatever Trump will deem it to be.
- Comment on Why does it seem like Americans have become so hateful and destructive in the past years? 2 months ago:
I apologize, I stopped reading about halfway through your post.
A lot of the call outs in this thread to delete your social media go outside and touch grass are spot on. You’re way too deep in social media and the 24hr news cycle.
I work in an industry that is very much conservative. Even the devoted MAGA people I meet are generally very nice if you speak with them outside of politics. A handful of the ones that seek out and want to talk politics (which is rare) are calm and I usually can get them to acknowledge the shortcomings of Trump when I start questioning the inconsistencies of his policies.
Our politics have grown courser and more extreme because of social media and the news cycle. The MAGA politicians of the Republican party take extreme positions to get attention. Moderation is ignored because it doesn’t grab headlines.
Yes Republican policies and very bad for our nation. But it doesn’t mean common citizens share those views. Usually it is much more nuanced.

False information claims can often be used to silence critics or ideas you don’t agree with.
I wouldn’t trust many of the mods to be impartial arbitrators of what information is false and what isn’t.

- Comment on Does anyone else think the NYPD photos of the UHC CEO shooting suspect don’t match? 3 months ago:
That’s what I think as well. The assassin hopped on a bike and pedaled off to Central Park.
Personally I think he had a different clothes going into the city. Changed in CP, Stole a bike, then biked to the hotel did the deed. Biked back to CP ditched the clothes and bike and left the city.
- Comment on Am I a bad person if (as left as they come) I invest in American Private Prison contractors on the assumption that Trump will go through with his deportation scheme at least to some extent? 3 months ago:
If you think you see an opportunity go ahead and invest and don’t feel ashamed. Many of the Hispanic immigrant communities that will adversely be affected by mass deportation had high levels of Trump support.
I say fuck it and make a buck. May those who voted for Trump get exactly what they voted for.

Not everyone is handy or knows how to use tools. Instead of a passive aggressive post on Lemmy. Perhaps talk to your neighbor comment on the fence posts and offer to fix it or show him/her how to fix it.
“Hey how is it going neighbor,I saw you fixed the fence. Love the new wood, did the hardware store not have the right length? Yeah that is a bummer, I have a saw, I’m sure I could help you get those planks evened out in a few minutes if you’d like.”
If they are a dick after that then post away.

Have your son travel, sending him off to see how other people live and how cheerful and helpful most people are is probably going to open his eyes.
- Puerto Rico, Bahama’s, St Lucia, British Virgin Islands are all fairly safe and you can mix and mingle with the locals. Just don’t stay somewhere where you will only stay on the resort. Get a hotel or resort in the middle of a community
I had a wonderful time in St Luca several years ago and stayed at the resort below. It’s a small resort in the middle of a town with lots of interaction with locals.
- Comment on How are Americans supposed to survive the next 30 years? 4 months ago:
For the last 40 years through free trade we’ve had a large population join the market from countries like China, Russia, India etc.
Free trade with China has given us cheap consumer goods but at the cost of our own manufacturing which suppressed wage growth and inflation for a long time. We hit the peak of this just before Covid and we are now feeling the after affects.
China’s dramatically aging population along with geopolitical instability means that the logistics and manufacturing capacity that existed overseas for 20 years Is now failing. The US forced to reshore or nearshore (Mexico) much of its manufacturing capacity. Basically if we want to continue to have stuff we need to find somewhere else to make it besides China. This isn’t a cheap process and it won’t be as efficient as the old system.
Russia’s war with Ukraine has huge implications on resources and energy. Russia exports a lot of raw materials, fertilizer products, food, energy and aluminum. Taking them offline has affected international trade and has many many markets.
Our institutions that support labor have also withered over the last 40 years. Labor unions don’t have the sway they used too and politicians have ignored their needs for decades. Big business will not just give wage increases much like in the 20s and 30s Labor will need to grow and become more combative than it currently is to see any improvements.
In short the world order that we all grew up in is breaking down and changing. It will be at least a decade before these changes finish shaking out and we see solutions to the problems we are facing fully materialize.
- Comment on Why do the majority of women still take their partner's last name? 4 months ago:
A. Many men would not marry a woman who didn’t take their name.
B. Makes parenting more difficult in social settings by not sharing the last name of your kids. I.E. Picking up your kid at school or making medical decisions about kids and having a different last name as the child forces you to jump through a lot more hoops.
C. Women tend to grow up knowing they are going to change their last name it’s not even an afterthought. My girlfriend told me her and her friends would often talk about what their name would be if they married a guy they liked.
D. In some states it is very difficult for a man to change their last name but for women the processes is already in place.
- Comment on Why people consistently vote against their own interests to benefit the rich? 4 months ago:
I agree with all of your points but believe there is one more.
Many vote for their party because that is what their family has always done. To them it is like rooting for their Football or Baseball team. They just want the win and feed off any news stories that support that view. No matter how much of complete failure a Republican President is (G.W.B. Comes to mind) their popularity never drops below 28% - 35%.

- Comment on US Elections question: Bernie Sanders said that the Democrats abandoned the working class, and the working class abandoned them. How is this true? 4 months ago:
Did you happen to visit Kamala’s website during the election. She listed who she represented…. Black males, Latino Males, no mention of working class white peoples.
That is identity politics. If you wonder why white women voted for Trump, they did it for their sons who aren’t mentioned at all.
Both Kamala and Biden championed another assault weapons ban.
- Comment on US Elections question: Bernie Sanders said that the Democrats abandoned the working class, and the working class abandoned them. How is this true? 4 months ago:
Identity politics, gun control, immigration, lagging economic recovery for labor, inflation and a distinct lack of ability to formulate a simple message. Sank Dems with the working class.
Policies are nice but most Americans don’t have a clue and don’t research anything.
Kamala spouted a bunch of policies and no message of hope. Trump had a bunch of headline grabbing antics and one liners. Guess which one wins with most Americans.
