- Comment on YouTube Blocks Access to Protest Anthem in Hong Kong 3 days ago:
As it is now, only people who read about it or live there and try to find the song will ever even know about the block. If Google refused and was kicked out of Hong Kong, just about every single citizen would notice and the government would have to explain precisely why they decided to ban all Google services over a song about freedom. I don’t think the people in charge would last long if that happened, considering how integral Google’s services are to many people’s lives.

That’s why I’d sign out ASAP if they made the announcement. It’d also definitely light a fire under my ass to start switching things to ProtonMail.

That’s why you let them think they lost a bunch of money for a few moments before giving it all back and tell them you love them, but that not everyone loves them in the same way and that real bankers won’t be so kind.
- Comment on It's important to get a good interest rate 2 weeks ago:
I think this may not be a bad way to teach kids the dangers of compound interest, but only if you refund the excess interest afterwards because actually tricking your kid into draining their bank account in interest is a dick move.

Well, I would just keep watching without signing in, then. Losing out on recommendations would be mildly annoying, but I could still access my subscription feed by being signed in on one window and copying video links to another one where I’m not.

My concern is that this race to the bottom is so that they can intentionally become unsustainable due to ad blockers. From there, they may be able to get Congress to ban ad blocking altogether.

Yeah. The idea of a Star Trek-like community of technologically similar alien races all developing in parallel and making alliances/wars with each other is not reflective of reality at all. If we ever encounter aliens, they will either have essentially no technology like animals or will be so far beyond us that they are effectively gods. The odds of us running into a civilization at an even remotely similar level of development are infinitesimal.

I think websites do this when they want to force you to change your password every so often (which is a really bad policy btw), but didn’t bother actually making a popup for it, so they just fuck with the database to invalidate everyone’s passwords every so often.

It’s a little embeddable mini-app that you can put on the home screen of your phone along with your app icons. For example, you might display the current weather on your home screen using a widget.

It looks like the changelog is on the Play Store, but there is no actual update yet. I didn’t even know that was possible.

If it’s normal, why does it bother me so much? The feeling drives me absolutely nuts and I hate it.

I liked lockdown at first. I became severely chronically ill during lockdown, so I’m basically still in lockdown due to low mobility and it has gone from an introvert’s dream to a nightmare. I haven’t made any new close IRL connections in years and I can barely ever see my existing friends other than online. It feels like it’s been simultaneously an eternity and only a few months since lockdown started and my mind is deteriorating.

I hope that doesn’t turn out to be the case for the Blizzard people that left and formed FrostGiant. I want modern, snappy RTS!

Don’t you just press shift 7 times and then click yes? What can you even do on a keyboard if you can’t do that? It seems like they intentionally made it easier to enable than completing pretty much any other task on a keyboard.

I mean, considering how widespread the hobby seems to be and how long limited forms of it have been around, I wouldn’t be surprised if evolution had a hand in it even if people don’t consciously perceive themselves as doing makeup for that reason. It’s kind of like how people tend to get bored of the same food if they eat it too much because the same taste over and over stops being interesting, but really, that mechanism promotes a more diverse diet that covers more nutritional requirements.

It doesn’t specify a cooldown on the teleportation. You could potentially move very quickly by rapidly teleporting, kind of like the old minecart trick in Minecraft.

I’m pretty sure it’s illegal for them to try to make you pay the service charge you didn’t agree to.

Technically, you could probably figure that stuff out manually by just working it out in your head if you were smart enough.

So I guess racial discrimination can’t be a thing if we’re all one race, right?
Stop trying to change the well-known and accepted definition of race. It doesn’t achieve anything.
- Comment on The Aliens did a little trolling 6 months ago:
If voting is mandatory, the most ethical thing to do would be to figure out which race has the least amount of people. Instead of killing millions of people, you could probably get it down to a few dozen or hundred.
- Comment on Xbox consoles getting full-screen ad 6 months ago:
That’s a great point. I wonder how many people have died because of billboards.
- Comment on Xbox consoles getting full-screen ad 6 months ago:
I’m all for banning billboards and whatnot. Forced advertising without any service in return is theft of attention and time.
- Comment on Xbox consoles getting full-screen ad 6 months ago:
We should use sortition to get the money out of politics. Modern cryptography allows us to generate verifiably random numbers. You should be able to put your name into a lottery that gets drawn from using calculations from said random numbers and if your name gets drawn, you have some period of time to study up and prepare to serve a term in congress. No elections, just pure and truly representative legislature.
- Comment on Xbox consoles getting full-screen ad 6 months ago:
It should be illegal to put ads in a system you paid for.

This is why all games should use independent forums moderated by passionate community members. If only there was some federated, open source platform they could move to in order to discuss the game anonymously and without repercussions from the devs…
