Perfect example of continual enshitification, there’s no reason even a 15s “short” or other quick media couldn’t have video controls, it’s just intentional because some dogshit behavioural phycologist they’ve paid said that’s the best way to coerce more engagement.
- Comment on Unity warns of likely layoffs following runtime fee decision 11 months ago:
Used unity for my last 3 games and I’m getting really really tired of their shithouse performance over the last 3-4 years. They’ve gone from constantly making new features, tutorials and systems to barely doing anything.
Engines need constant feature packed updates, not bare bones rubbish. A perfect example of this is DLSS, there is NO native engine support for DLSS, there’s support for dogshit FSR1 (that no one uses because it’s scaling is terrible and full of artifacts) but it’s just so much to ask for native DLSS support. It doesn’t matter that “well DLSS is only got Nvidia so that’s only a subset of cards”, the vast majority have those cards so it makes sense to support them. I’m not even talking about DLSS3 frame generation, I mean DLSS2.X which has been out for years and is super stable and reliable.
Game engines should be rapidly evolving and supporting these features, they should take 3-4 years to get commonly implements features or to have to rely on third party plugins to make them happen.

Finally, was wondering where exactly these things would have been used 😮
- Comment on SteamOS will be coming to other handhelds before you can install it on your PC 'because right now, it's very, very tuned for Steam Deck' | PC Gamer 11 months ago:
Be very keen to see steam OS everywhere, there’s a vetted interest in valve getting this widely adopted (more devices running it means more eyes on steam and more potential sales)
I’m keen to see the hardware variations device manufacturers come up with when they can just throw steam os on them and it all “just works”

They all serve a purpose in their own way, this one specifically does a great job!

Your membership to the service is now worse off comparatively, so the benefits you receive have shrunk. Shrinkflation feels pretty apt here

So that’s what keeps happening to all my cookies!

It reminds me of those horror movies where little creatures all merge together to form one large grotesque abomination. I bet they’re tasty tho!

At least one head rolled from that fiasco. The rest of the board needs to be yeeted out the window also given the role they played

This one. One of the best motivators. Sense of satisfaction when you get it working and you feel unstoppable (until the next subtle changes happens anyway)
- Comment on Chad scraper 1 year ago:
Much less beholden to arbitrary rules also. Way too many times companies will just up and lift their API access or push through restrictions. No ty, I’ll just access it myself then
- Comment on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater™ 1 + 2 is coming to Steam on October 3 1 year ago:
1 and 2 are great games. Should be top quality too on Steamdeck. Never got around to finishing the remake of 1 but one day I’ll get to it lol
- Comment on Grindr loses nearly half its staff to strict return-to-work rule 1 year ago:
I’m sure they’ll find plenty of top tier new engineers who will take a position at Grindr instead of literally any other job that offers full time WFH support 🙄
Wonder when executive got upset that when they went into the office to have a look, they got lonely that no one else was suffering in-office with them and this is the outcome.

Good luck doing that too Nintendo. They’re professional dicks
- Comment on Updated Edge and it now seems to put a frame with rounded corners around every website 1 year ago:
I get we’re all old blokes and don’t like change, but these rounded corners and UI changes are arguably better. Nothing wrong with a new modern look

Probably rubbish scraped from other legitimate sites. These websites are just the worst
- Comment on lemm.ee plans for mitigating image upload abuse 1 year ago:
Might be useful to adjust the field themselves so instead of looking for a local image, they can pull in something from an external URL (hosted on imgur). That way at least avatars / banners will still work without the onus being on the server.
Hopefully they sort out all this stuff eventually
- Comment on lemm.ee plans for mitigating image upload abuse 1 year ago:
I get we don’t trust these third party image hosting sites, but if it’s that or having local images that can potentially bring down instances, I’d say that’s a no brainier of a compromise.
These upload sites like imgur automatically handle image detection and take the load off smaller servers. It seems like a perfect solution got now
- Comment on lemm.ee plans for mitigating image upload abuse 1 year ago:
Overall it’s a tough situation to be in. I feel a combination of account restrictions would be a way to mitigate the majority of these low quality troll accounts who get verified and then immediately start spamming.
Having images uploads tied behind user metrics such as interactions, time since creation, upvote / downvote count etc I feel would be a good indicator of a “real” user. You’ll always have bad actors coming in causing issues, but at least making new users jump through hoops will make this process slower.
Closing registrations temporarily to add in extra mod features is fine, but leaving it closed and switching to an invite only system feels like it’s going to slow adoption (unless in the request an invite form it’s explicit that the request will be processed quickly, people will just move on otherwise)
- Comment on Image uploads are now disabled on lemm.ee due to malicious users 1 year ago:
Perfectly fine. People can upload images elsewhere and then just link to them. Most image upload sites will have all those protections in place already. A good stopgap until Lemmy gets those mod tools
- Comment on Pick your Lemmy instance wisely... 1 year ago:
I was part of that discussion. There was an ongoing attribution issue where a person claimed their open source project wasn’t being attributed correctly (where it looks like kbin is forked from another older project)
With the Reddit migration and a range of other issues, old mate who manages kbin didn’t get around to fixing the attribution (choosing to focus on getting the server stable and fixing actual issues)
It got brough up again last week in a not so flattering post and within a day or two it was resolved (putting to bed the idea that old mate is actually out to steal people’s code)
Not a great situation overall but it’s great it’s been resolved 🦙🦙🦙

It’s a great place, everyone’s been smashing through tickets getting things improved, but like with all open source stuff it takes a while to push out the good stuff

Sounds like it’s a bit of both tbh

- Comment on Can we please unpin the proprietary off-site/off-network promotion of discord 1 year ago:
Matrix itself works fantastically for chat, we use it to coordinate conversations for kbin. It’s like a non shit version of discord (minus the video / audio support I guess)
- Comment on Noooooo you can't make a microtransactions free game and finished too 😭😭😭 1 year ago:
You could give studios unlimited budgets and they’d still complain they don’t have enough time / money to get things right. The rhetoric is that that “games are just so complex nowadays” and that justifies their 4/5/6 year development periods.
I’m not seeing the complexity that warrants that type of long development period. The visual fidelity on some games is impressive, but is it actually worth that 5 year dev time?
