Yep. It’s awful. And then you have the occasional other situation when it reinforces that women can’t be “real engineers” so a few of my friends and colleagues have been at booths at events and have to deal with awful sexist nonsense because of this being the awful sexist norm.

Free speech absolutists that don’t recognise that telling people to kill people, burn down their houses, or sink the boats they’re on is a very obvious line and not a “slippery slope”.

The paradox of tolerance is that intolerance can never be tolerated.

I think images/meme level stuff is fine. As long as it’s resharing something that is resonating rather than just reposting. i.e. posting the image or video directly rather than linking to Reddit. And as others mentioned, a text story is likely to be inappropriate, unless we do the whole screenshot other social media site trend which is fine imo

Speed, boats need to be outside the area where they might get hit, which is actually quite large.
Boats, even fast ones, are quite slow. And the larger boats that the fast ones would be deployed from are even slower. So even though that risk area gets smaller as the capsule descends, the big boats are waaaayy slower and still stuck far away. Generally, too far for ‘fast’ boats to get there quickly enough.
Helicopters are much faster, also relative to the size to be able to have medical staff on hand. So they can get there fast enough.
There is significant possibility of injury, and often times there are communication blackouts when they would already need to be leaving to make it in time. So, you send the fast thing.

- Comment on Women are being abandoned by their partners on hiking trails. What’s behind ‘alpine divorce’? 2 months ago:
The term alpine divorce references a book about a murder/suicide/framing plot of a couple going in a mountain holiday. (Check
So the term implies that it is attempted murder.
- Comment on Women are being abandoned by their partners on hiking trails. What’s behind ‘alpine divorce’? 2 months ago:
The article dives into more nuance. The hypothesis being that it could have something to do with instances where men feel more of a need to be able to “complete” the “objective” of the hike, or may go on hikes which are more demanding than their partner may be ready for, or also that they may be ready for.
Similarly, one of the experts in the article goes on to say that this they don’t particularly like making it a gender thing, but unfortunately there is some stark correlation

Not specific, but this site is a good starting point when looking for (generally) more ethical services. Many of the listed are open source, or were created specifically to combat these data sucking abusive monopolies.
- Comment on Farming for self sustainance 2 months ago:
Have a look at permaculture for self sustainable agriculture, no need for fertilisers etc.
You’ll need probably at least half a hectare to start approach food independence. But even with that you will struggle to get the bulk. Potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, etc will be your friend there.
Depending where you live you might be able to grow most of your vegetable intake on less land, but you will also need a significant chunk of legumes for protein.
And in terms of fruit, you basically need a decent chunk of space to make a so called “food forest” where you have a mix of species of fruit trees and shrubs.
Geoff Lawton is a great resource!

- Comment on Labour to abolish most short prison sentences in England and Wales 8 months ago:
Oh for sure, effective rehab programs need a decent chunk of funding. And they are expensive until they start paying for themselves years or even decades down the line. And their benefits are typically indirect so they are very hard to actually measure their success.
But it’s shown time and time again that the current system doesn’t work. And I would rather we spend what little money we have getting rapists longer sentences than thieves and vandals.
- Comment on Labour to abolish most short prison sentences in England and Wales 8 months ago:
Prisons don’t really do much to deter crimes with short sentences anyway. And they often result in people just getting more damaged and more likely to commit more crime.
Most crimes which carry short sentences should be handled through probation and social support (not financial obviously).
Community service is a classic punishment which I think makes good sense for nonviolent crime.
A bigger problem is the inability to sentence violent offenders to lengthy stays in prisons. And of course the lack of rehabilitation in those prisons.
