Doing my part to bring back rational, good faith discussions online.

If I misread your comment, I apologize. It’s not easy to dig through every comment thread and map each person’s replies to the claims they’re making in other threads. If you were simply disputing the number quoted in the meme, that wasn’t clear.
I’ve been conditioned by lots of other online interactions by insane right wing MAGA lunatics to read that as a whataboutism argument, a bias I’m realizing is creating a lot of confusion here.
- Comment on I'm a MAGAt 4 days ago:
I’m glad I asked. I agree, that comment is bullshit. The way you responded, it wasn’t clear what you meant, to be honest. It reads a bit like you’re defending the MAGA justification for going to war.
“They killed 20k protestors” is ambiguous in its meaning. Are they saying that’s a lie, and MAGA is stupid for not seeing that it’s a psyop? Or are they saying MAGA is stupid for thinking that’s really why we’re going to Iran, to rescue the civilians, and save them from this evil regime?
You seem to have taken the first interpretation. I think a lot of other people here assumed the second. Also, I don’t even see that comment, so it’s even more confusing what you meant.
- Comment on I'm a MAGAt 4 days ago:
What comment are you referring to, specifically?
- Comment on I'm a MAGAt 4 days ago:
Goddamn it, we fucking know.
If Trump was trying to rescue them from the Iranian regime, he sure has a weird way of going about it, yeah? The only thing he’s been bitching about is opening the strait. He’s even threatened to bomb Iran “back to the stone age where they belong” his words, if they don’t comply. And “kill an entire civilization”, doesn’t really sound like a good way to stop the murder of civilians.
Iran committing violence against their citizens is reprehensible and should be condemned. Obviously. But if you really believe that’s why Trump is waging this war, you should consider the overwhelming evidence that he’s been played by the Israelis and his sycophant cabinet is too scared to tell him it’s a fucking horrible, stupid idea, that will only serve to harm US interests in the region. If the Iranians benefit in any way from this war, it’s an unintended consequence. He’s a moron with a god complex. He has ZERO care for the Iranian people, because he only cares about himself. That’s all he’s ever cared about.

Nope, this could be literally anywhere in the US.

I agree it is. It’s just not there yet. Speaking for myself, I still have a lot to lose. I know a lot of people in that same boat, and these people saying we should overthrow our government forget that a significant portion of the populace fully supports what the trump administration is doing and many of them work for the fucking cops. And the ones who don’t support trump aren’t desperate enough yet. It’s going to take a critical mass of desperation before anything real changes. I wish it didn’t work that way, but too many people are complacent and just fuck off whenever they’re given an opportunity to vote these cunts out.

Yep, but if it does reach that tipping point, it’s going to get very ugly.

Language evolves, the meaning of words change. It’s a natural part of the evolution of language over time. You say hang up the phone or dial a phone number, don’t you? But you don’t literally hang up a phone when you’re done with it or turn a literal dial anymore. But they used to work that way, so we still use that language even though the original meaning is lost.
I would argue that although this phrase originated from dismissing the opinions of actual boomers, it’s become a convenient shorthand way of calling someone out of touch with current social trends without having to adapt new phrases every time.

I was handed a water bottle the.other day at a volunteer event and was lamenting the fact that in the US, we don’t have attached caps. I almost immediately lost mine. It’s possible to make them attached, AND not suck.

Considering how important it is to me that I’m not some piece of shit manager, yeah, it was a little personal. I take that kind of thing seriously. It kinda doesn’t work as a meme reference without the meme.

Not everyone in my position is a sniveling little shit, as much as you may think. I do get paid more than my team, but not by some ridiculous margin. The lowest paid person gets 70% what I do and the highest paid person is at 95%. When I took over it was no shit closer to 40% for the lowest paid member. I fought for that to be fixed and burned up a lot if political capital doing it too.
When COVID came along and pay cuts and layoffs were a real threat, I told my boss to cut my salary before anyone else’s. We never had to, thankfully, but I literally told him I would quit if they cut one of my subordinates pay or laid them off without first taking out of my pocket.
I had a direct report who, for three years wanted to be in a leadership role. I fought for a new position for him and put my own ass on the line recommending him for promotion every chance I got. He’s been promoted past me and I hope (since I can’t see his salary anymore) he is getting paid more than me because he’s earned it.
I’m not some superstar manager, but I do feel like I keep my team out of the political battles and turf wars so they can focus on doing what they do best without dealing with all that crap. That’s my job. When something goes wrong, I’m accountable. So when the people doing the work get it wrong and take a critical system offline by fat fingering a command, I’m the one answering the phones and taking all the shit for it and smoothing things over with stake holders. And unless it was a result of gross negligence, I’m not going to give them hell for it either because I’ve fucking been there before.
I didn’t even want this damn job. I was perfectly happy being the technical lead and not having job recruiting and performance reviews to do, but I took it because I knew at the very least I would do my best to advocate for the people I care about, and that’s not something I could say about everyone who applied.
So you can make snap judgements and assume because I manage a team that I’m just collecting a paycheck while everyone else does all the hard work, but I don’t and I won’t because it’s unethical and shitty and despite your own insecurities, I actually give a fuck about other people.
- Comment on A genre of Country Music... 2 years ago:
Absolutely. As someone who manages a small team, my duties are advocating for the people who work for me, listening to the people closest to the problem, mediating disputes between people with different solutions, and ensuring we are all working towards the same overall goals. Most of the success of the team is directly attributed to their work. My biggest contribution is making sure they have what they need to do their job.
