  But yeah, like the other commenter said: $10m puts you WELL outside of working class. That’s enough to retire on anywhere on the world, and with a high degree of luxury outside of a handful of the most expensive cities. That money, invested by anybody with half a brain, will make enough money per year than many extremely skilled professions make. We’re talking doctor salary without doing any actual work. They’re not buying senators wholesale like billionaires, but their house rep probably knows them by name.

  Rule of thumb for a retirement portfolio is to withdraw 4% per year. 4% of $1M is $40k. People survive on 40k/year, but you’d be considered pretty low income in most areas.

  Big point being that in the US we have many cost of living expenses that the UK does not (or rather, you get it via your taxes)

  Yeah, let’s not fool ourselves. Civilization is difficult. There are no simple answers to getting millions of people to coexist. The answers that sound simple are usually just sweeping the difficult parts under the rug.

  That said: humans are historically really good at solving complex problems. We have the capacity to address these things despite their difficulty. The problem is, like the OP says, a lot of people with tons of money and power would prefer that our aggregate problem-solving capability is directed towards complex problems that give THEM more wealth and power, rather than lifting up those with little.

  The USA is huge. IDK what country you’re from, but I’ll use France as a point of comparison because it’s large and the capital isn’t really in the center.

  Bayonne->Paris is about the farthest you can be from the capital while still living in mainland France. That’s 770 km.

  This is shorter than the distance from Washington DC->Atlanta, which is in one of the original 13 colonies. It’s pretty close to the distance from DC->Indianapolis, but that’s still within the 1776 USA borders (albeit, an unorganized territory of the 13 colonies).

  Add in the Louisiana purchase and various conquests westward, and a Californian visiting DC can be like visiting Paris from Kuwait.

  It’s reasonably common for USians to visit their state capital, but visiting DC is definitely an upper-middle class vacation unless you happen to live in a nearby state already.

  Cleaning supplies alone are a huge consumable. Arts & crafts materials. Toys are basically consumables because kids play rough. Same for books. Some daycares include breakfast, lunch, and snack. First aid supplies, kids hurt themselves all the time.

  But yeah, definitely also lots of diverting profits up to the CEO 😓

  The one thing that upset me watching the Artemis II mission broadcast was the constant use of imperial units.

  NASA uses metric units internally. They had to intentionally translate than back into imperial units for the livestream. Please, folks. Use the better units.

  I mean, the earliest known currency is almost exactly as old as the earliest known cities. Farmers would deposit a large amount of grain at the local temple (which were effectively the tax collection sites of the time) and were given clay tokens on exchange, which could be used in place of actual goods at tax time.

  This system was set up because of the nature of farming: you make a lot of product in a short time, but most of the year you’re just waiting for your crop to grow. These tokens allowed farmers to pay their tax duties up front, and then have physical proof that they’d done so when paying taxes outside of harvest season. But it was only a matter of time before people started trading those tokens amongst each other. “Give me a goat and I’ll give you these tokens so you don’t have to pay tribute next season.”

  Before that, villages were pretty much just hand-to mouth communities of just a few families. Surviving, sure, but not in the kind of complex society where one needs to draw equivalence between extremely different forms of labor.

  My cubicle office job often involves going downstairs to the lab so I can take measurements with equipment far too expensive for me to have at home, and even too expensive for the company to lend out to employees’ home offices.

  A lot of return-to-office work is bullshit, but making absolutist blanket statements like that just weakens the argument rather than helping anybody.

  They use the same banks as us, they just have a VP’s direct cell number rather than talking to a run-of-the-mill teller during business hours.

  JP Morgan didn’t get all their assets by exclusivity serving low net worth individuals.

  As long as you spin it (along the axis of the handle), the honey stays on the stick and doesn’t drip all over everything. When you stop spinning, it drips all over your food.

  It’s a niche tool but 11/10 at its one job.

  If you can afford $9/mo, YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a great app for managing income and expenses that don’t necessarily align on a calendar schedule.

  I get that budgeting won’t make up for insufficient income, but if it’s actually the financial habits that are holding you back, this app works wonders for learning how to properly plan your expenses.

  If you’re into open source stuff and are willing to spend more effort tinkering, ActualBudget is the same concept, but lacks some QoL features (notably, auto-importing transactions from your bank/credit card statements).

  There’s also the massive gray area of “what do YOU define AI to mean?”

  There are legitimate use cases for machine learning and neural networks besides LLMs and “art” vomit. Like, what AI used to mean to gamers: how the computer plays the game against you. That probably isn’t going to upset many people.

  (IIRC, Steam’s AI disclosure is specifically about AI-generated graphics and music so that ambiguity might be settled here)

  Lead pipes are less of an issue that it would seem, as the pipes quickly develop a layer of calcium salts on the inside, preventing the water from actually coming into contact with the lead.

  By all means, they need replaced. But they’re nowhere near the contributor that leaded gasoline was.

  Acorns are like the easiest thing to forage, though.

  They are high in tannins, which your body is pretty good at processing in reasonable quantities (they’re in tea, coffee, and wine), but many acorns DO have unreasonable quantities of them and they can cause organ damage. Luckily, tannins are water soluble, so you just need to crack them open and soak them in water for a few days, then rinse and they’re safe to eat.

  Given that this is a laptop we’re talking about, OP is definitely over selling it. Bring a backpack, unpack the laptop box into your backpack (assuming the box is too big to fit in the backpack itself). Something bigger like a TV would be more problematic.

  The main worry is that being seen with new-in-box fancy electronics makes you look like “guy with money”. It’s not so much that someone’s gonna steal your TV on the subway, but if you can afford a new TV your wallet probably has good stuff in it.

  The US may affect the whole world less next year if everyone else works hard to find alternate markets, but it’s going to take longer than that for the rest of the world to totally detangle themselves from our mess.
