- Comment on Couldn't governments just remotely disable phones nearby to prevent evidence of police brutality from being recorded? 16 hours ago:
Looking at how bad our current system is, there’s clearly no need to prevent the videos from getting out because the officer can get away with it despite that.
And even if the officer doesn’t, the department can just scapegoat them and just keep doing the same things.
All the more reason to not waste a 0-day or risk the knowledge of a backdoor getting out.
- Comment on Couldn't governments just remotely disable phones nearby to prevent evidence of police brutality from being recorded? 17 hours ago:
You’d likely only be able to use it effectively once before people seek out different recording devices, or just the knowledge that cameras were disabled in that area would be as damning as any video.
Especially for any zero-day exploits. As soon as it gets used people start protecting against them so they often don’t work for very long. It would need to be a pretty big coverup to be worth burning an exploit on. Especially if it’s likely that at least one person in the area wouldn’t be susceptible and could still record it.
- Comment on Is it okay to continue to work for a (non-defense) federal government agency under an administration hostile to my own moral and ethical beliefs? 2 weeks ago:
Working for the agency isn’t the problem on its own. If your job requires you to do something that is against your morals, resist up to and including loudly leaving that job. But until then it’s more important than ever to stick it out and push to make things better any way you can.

There’s no mention of meat pies in that story, not even sandwiches.

To be fair they weren’t inbred yet
- Comment on Eat lead 3 weeks ago:
If God created it in that state then they should be curious to understand that creation. They look at rainbows as the beauty of creation but not the fact that lead exists in these crystals. It’s all equally beautifully complex. So why not try to understand it.
If God made the world look like it was created billions of years ago there must be something worth learning from that, even if you believe it was snapped into existence 6000 years ago.
- Comment on How do you get better at debate without necessarily doing a debate? 4 weeks ago:
Don’t rely too much on ChatGPT here. It’s not a human and isn’t going to respond the same way a human would.
If you over practice with that tool you might become great at debating ChatGPT but that may entrench bad habits that hurt you when debating a human.
- Comment on How does US "early voting" works logistically speaking ? 4 weeks ago:
I think this is the strongest protection against this attack. You’d need to identify enough people at enough varied polling locations to be significant enough to sway an election.
Do too many at one location and it raises flags. Cast a vote with a name that also votes absentee or at another location, raises flags.
You’d have to distribute enough fake votes over a large enough area and across enough different shifts to not get anyone’s attention. And that’s expensive and hard to keep secret due to how many people would be involved.
- Comment on Does hair in food carry any health risks? 4 weeks ago:
A lot of food safety laws are built around the highest levels of safety because you never know how vulnerable one of your patrons might be. I have no idea about the actual health impacts but based on that I assume it’s another minor vector for foodbourne illness that alone has a really small impact.
I’m more worried about what it means about the rest of the kitchen’s cleanliness. Hairnets/hats are easy, so if they can’t do that then what else are they forgetting?
- Comment on Is mooning someone considered sexual assault? 1 month ago:
I think it might depend on if the person mooning is moving toward the victim and if the victim is “in range” of…the butt.
If someone was backing that (bare) ass up on me I’d definitely feel threatened, or if they moon me so close that they might spray me.
- Comment on Are there any legal issues with pulling out of an interview? 3 months ago:
No legal issues at all. Worst case they will blackball you from interviewing at that company for a few years, and tell other companies in that industry, or others that work with those recruoters at least, that you’re a flake and try to get you blackballed there too. And that’s going to be incredibly rare and only really happen if you’re an asshole about it or no-call-no-show the interview and waste their time.
Politely decline to continue with them, they’ll probably appreciate that you’re being honest and not wasting their time interviewing you for you to just say no later.
“I’ve decided to pursue other endeavors, thank you for your time”.
- Comment on For here am I sitting in my tin can 3 months ago:
The last update I heard (granted that was weeks ago now) was that the capsule was faulty but still perfectly functional for reentry. They just wanted to do more testing first since reentry would also destroy their opportunity to learn more about what’s wrong.
Its apparently still entirely functional for emergency reentry.
- Comment on to those of you who get bored at work if there's lots of downtime, why? 7 months ago:
Easier said than done, but yes this is very true. It’s way too easy to fuck up and touch the wrong account, or sync the wrong data, or otherwise contaminate your personal projects with work.
- Comment on Pros and cons of getting a job at a very small software company? (14 employees) 7 months ago:
A small company like that likely won’t have policies and processes to fall back on. This can be good for some things, but when things go bad it can backfire.
Mainly for things like promotions, HR, complaints, etc. In big companies there’s a formal process for how to get promoted and what’s expected at each level, etc. Same for HR complaints. At a small company you’re going to be more subject to the whims of whoever is in charge.
Same for new projects. In a big company you have red tape and processes to blame when something fails, but in a small company it’ll be more likely to be “your fault”.
- Comment on to those of you who get bored at work if there's lots of downtime, why? 7 months ago:
This. And even if you do have time to let your mind wander you can’t actually “do” your hobbies at work. At least for me I can’t do any personal programming projects while working or my job will own whatever I do.
I don’t even plan to sell anything, I just want ownership of it so I can’t even fill my time with that.
- Comment on If Trump and Biden both died today, what would happen? 10 months ago:
Them both being dead is both convenient and conveniently suspicious. Since Trump is guarded by secret service, conspiracies would arise saying they (under Bidens order, or a Harris power grab) killed him. It would be completely absurd given the circumstances and no reputable source would support it, but people would believe it anyway and Fox would push the story. Widely broadcast funerals for each of them.
Then nothing… The conspiracies would flow, but nothing much would change.
- Comment on 'Wildly more expensive': Workers with in-office jobs spend about $31/day that they wouldn't working from home — here's what employers need to do 1 year ago:
Setting aside that time to meal prep still has a cost though. Mentally and time-wise.
- Comment on Nowadays, on certain games and game launchers, you can play the game before its fully downloaded. How is possible? 1 year ago:
I think it’s more that you can play the game with low res textures while all the high red ones download.
That and I’m sure they order the download so level 1’s textures download first too so you’ll probably not end up reaching the areas being downloaded until they’re available.
- Comment on How can i become a best friend for someone ? 1 year ago:
Do similar things with a similar meaning, don’t just do what they do. They might like buying small gifts, but receiving small gifts might make them feel guilty.
- Comment on What's with employers using secure messengers for hiring these days? 1 year ago:
“Sir or ma’am I assure you it’s safe to send me your banking information. It’s over Signal, so it’s secure. I promise no one can steal it because its encrypted. That’s why we’re not using emails, emails are not secure. We need this information immediately, do not delay.”
- Comment on Now everyone must pay for someone else's vandalism. 1 year ago:
But would this policy actually prevent that? A vandal in a community of 100 people would only be charged 1% of the repair fees (assuming they aren’t caught), seems like a meaningless disincentive for them.
And forcing community members to self-police or be charged fees is asking for trouble.
- Comment on Now everyone must pay for someone else's vandalism. 1 year ago:
It’s also part of the reason why maintenance budgets exist. The condo board/government/etc should be responsible for factoring in the risk of vandalism repairs into their budget and spreading that cost over time. That’s why they exist.
At the end of the day it’s my dues/taxes that pay it either way, but I shouldn’t get stuck with a surprise assessment unless it’s a major unexpected repair.
