- Comment on Why do cell phones have a data limit but home internet doesn't? 4 weeks ago:
How is 1€/day cheap for such limited home Internet? I guess it might depend on where you are, but unless you are in the middle of nowhere that seems expensive.
Here in Germany for example, which really isn’t known for its cheap internet, I can find options that offer 100Mbit Flatrates for 20€/month.
- Comment on Which great actor is overdue for a career defining role? 5 weeks ago:
I think it was slightly ahead of it’s time and had terrible marketing. At least here in Germany it was marketed as “Dredd 3D” at a time where the hype had died down, and probably turned into the opposite due to all movies getting unnecessary and poorly made 3D conversions.
- Comment on A first look at Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt in The Electric State. Directed by the Russo Brothers. Coming 2025. 1 month ago:
Agreed. Reusing the same set of hyped actors across films definitely reduces the level of immersion. Unless ofc the actors can truly transform themselves like Colin Farrell in the new Penguin series to give a recent example.
I think the issue is that nowadays the job of actors in big movies like these is just as much being a vehicle for marketing as it is the acting itself. I’ve heard that the rule of thumb is that Hollywood spends a similar amount on marketing as it does on production. So you want someone with a household name that people recognize, that people associate with a type of movie they like, and that can tour through the media circus and talks shows creating buzz.
Plus it helps with acquiring financing.
So as much as I’d want to see more fresh faces (and more normal people, not the unrealistic Hollywood standards), I doubt it’ll happen.

- Comment on CEO Pay Has Risen 1,085% Since 1978, But for Workers? Just 24% 2 months ago:
My comment was aimed more towards the excessive CEO pay, not the stagnation in worker’s pay.
Probably not the best source (just one of the first Google results), but if I read something like this:
How much money did Marissa Mayer make while running Yahoo? During her five years at Yahoo, from 2012 to 2017, Marissa’s total compensation, including salary, stock, and bonuses, was $405 million. Verizon acquired Yahoo for a little over $4 billion in 2016. Marissa earned roughly $120 million from the acquisition through a mix of bonuses, accelerated stock options and salary. For example, she was paid a onetime bonus of $23,011,325 once the Verizon acquisition was finalized.
Then it seems to be like the shareholders somehow got the short end, despite being the ones with the power to make changes.
- Comment on CEO Pay Has Risen 1,085% Since 1978, But for Workers? Just 24% 2 months ago:
I am actually still not sure why it isn’t fixed through voting. And I mean shareholder-voting, not public voting.
But after things like Elon Musk’s compensation package getting approved (again) it cleared won’t work through that mechanism either.
- Comment on Alien: Romulus (2024) - What did you think? [Spoilers] 2 months ago:
Kind of late, since i just came around to seeing it. Some thoughts:
-
I really liked the visuals and i’m glad i got to see it in the cinema on a really good screen, so more or less the best possible experience. But i agree that the Rook animatronic looked a bit off (but i’d have to rewatch).
-
As someone else already mentioned i also liked the dystopian setting of the first act.
-
I liked that they were leaning more into the horror, rather than action genre. But imo unlike the first Alien movie it had a few too many jump scares and overused the xenomorphs. Where the original was able to build tension with what you can’t see, here you had a whole pack of them. And somehow they get mowed down way too easily.
-
Agreed that there were too many callbacks and easter eggs, rather than letting the movie stand on its own. Especially the Ripley line was just too obvious and imo breaks the immersion into the movie.
-
Not a huge fan of the third act

- Comment on The Electric State | The Russo Brothers' $320m sci-fi is reportedly streaming on Netflix in March 2025 2 months ago:
Yeah it’s pretty insane, for that kind of money it better be fantastic. Although I think nowadays the link between money and quality (to whatever degree it ever existed) is weaker than it’s ever been.
I’ve always wondered, how do streaming movies make money at all? Does Netflix really make enough money to justify spending this much on a movie?
Well they certainly make enough money, last quarters revenue was roughly 9.5 billion dollar. Sure you got server costs, salaries and licensing for old content that eat up a lot, but if you are getting over 3 billion per month from your subscribers you should be able to find some budget for expensive content.
I don’t think a movie like this will be efficient in $/h watched, those will go to cheap series and people putting on their favorite comfort show in the background for the 10th rerun. But they probably still need those big tent pole movies for psychological reasons. It’s good for marketing towards new subscribers and for user retention you will need the occasional blockbuster movie. Don’t need to be that many per year, since as said the vast majority of time will be spend watching some simple stuff, but you do need fresh content for the occasional movie night. Or people will start looking at the competition that offers those and which also has plenty of mindless entertainment.
- Comment on Darren Aronofsky in Talks to Direct ‘Plastic Man’ for DCU 2 months ago:
Definitely not an obvious choice and it might fail spectacularly. But imo this seems like the right choice in some ways.
Instead of trying to will a fomularic cinematic universe into existence, make a variety of unique movies (hopefully good), and then slowly tie them together.
- Comment on What kind of laptop should I get? 3 months ago:
I think you’ll need to give some more information to receive good advice:
-
What’s your budget
-
What’s your use case? Just web browsing, light office work or something more demanding like gaming or editing?
-
What form factor? Want a larger screen or something lighter and more compact? Touch screen/convertible yes or no?
I’m nowhere near tech-savvy so it has to be easy to use,
Easy to use or easy to repair? As far as use goes pretty much every windows laptop will be feel the same to use, same as with apple. I mean it is the same operating system, just depends on what you are used to, but neither are complicated. It’s only Linux where you have a larger variety of variants, some easier to use, others geared more towards advanced users. Bur you haven’t indicated that you specifically want to run Linux.
I want something that is built to last, as opposed to certain (looking at you, Apple) devices that are desinged to become unusable within a next couple of years.
Generally laptops aimed at businesses are more durable than consumer lines. Don’t go to cheap unless you are buying used business laptops. And if something is heavilu leaning towards thin and light, then usually it is at the expense of some durability.
Apple is actually decently durable and I’ve seen quite a few MacBooks running for over a decade while still being ok. Where they fall short is repairability, when something does break and their lowest specs paired with no real way to upgrade later (especially with the newer models that don’t even have SSDs that can be swapped) is bad for future proofing, if demands change. And they make you pay through your nose for reasonable configurations.

- Comment on We are in July, which movies from 2024 would you recommend so far? 4 months ago:
I’ll go based on letterboxd release year. Often times it’s hard for me to judge towards which year I should count a film that might have had a limited release in the previous year, but then a wider cinema run later.
So far I’ve enjoyed:
-
Dune part 2: epic sci-fi and that is exactly my jam, so thus far my favorite movie of the year.
-
Civil war: Imo flawed in some ways and not quite what I expected (expected it to be more social commentary and less about war photograpy), but overall still very much a recommendation and good movie. Alex Garland has made some of my favorite films of all times (ex machina and Dredd, also enjoyed annihilation), but it didn’t reach those heights, so I’d rank it below those.
-
Exhuma: usually not a horror fan, but I guess I very much enjoy the Korean ones. More direct compared to “The wailing”, which it somewhat reminded me of, but that had more of a mystery aspect.
Movies that don’t yet have a wide release, but that I already saw at a film festival:
-
Black box diaries: Documentary by the journalist Shiori Itō about her own sexual assault case and her battle against the outdated judicial system and social views in Japan. Sadly I missed the screening with q&a afterwards. I found it interesting and overall well made, definitely gets a recommendation for whenever it gets a wider release later this year.
-
All we imagine as light: Drama set in india. Feels like comparatively I’ve seen less movies set in India, so it’s always nice to get a view into other cultures. Overall I enjoyed it and can also recommend it to people that like this type of movie.
Also watched “the substance” (body horror) during the festival, but while decent that just isn’t quite my cup of tea.
Some movies that I found “meh” so far include Furiosa and monkey man, but there is also a lot that I haven’t seen so far.

Yeah the cast looks pretty solid, my only uncertainty in that regard is to what degree Denzel/Pedro Pascal disappear into their respective role vs me seeing them as these familiar actors. But that might be a subjective problem
Besides that any mention of Aftersun automatically gets an upvote from me, such a great movie and performance by Paul Mescal.
- Comment on 10 Lovecraft Stories That Need Modern Movie Adaptations 4 months ago:
To be fair: from a financial perspective that sounds like the right call, even if the movie would have been interesting.
R rated horror movies just don’t bring in the amount of money to sustain high budgets like that. The exception being “It” (and the sequel), but that had more mainstream appeal and also only came out years later.
Although isn’t the break even number usually closer to double the budget?
- Comment on What would you consider to be the greatest action movie of the 2000s so far? 5 months ago:
For me personally it’s “Dredd”, but to be fair I am also a sci-fi fan in general.
I guess besides that “the raid”, “Kill Bill” and the first “John wick” probably have to be up there.
- Comment on Microsoft announces the Proteus Controller, a gamepad for Xbox gamers with disabilities 6 months ago:
It’s a ton of money when comparing it to mainstream electronics, but I’d imagine that $300 single payment is a drop in the bucket for something medical. Anyone who needs it probably spends similar amounts or more adapting other everyday things for ease of use.
It’s a niche probably low volume product that requires a good amount of hardware and software engineering.
- Comment on Are people excited for Furiosa? 6 months ago:
Personally i am not extremely hyped, but assume it will deliver a solid movie.
I can appreciate the quality and craftmanship of the 2015 Mad Max: Fury road, but somehow despite that it just didn’t quite click with me.
In regards of the stunts and so on i expect Fuirosa to deliver similarly. Where i am unsure (based on the trailer) is whether the casting can match Fury road. Feels like Tom Hardy has aruggedness (?) to him that fits better into the Mad Max world compared to Chris Hemsworth.
- Comment on [Discussion thread] Civil War 6 months ago:
Saw it yesterday night, so this are just some of my first impressions and it’ll take some time to process and maybe a rewatch for any final verdict.
Coming from Alex Garland, who made some of my favorite movies of all time (Ex Machina and Dredd), and distributed by A24, who have an exceptional track record, my expectations were extremely high. In the end it didn’t quite live up to them, but admittedly that might just be on me. Overall it is a very good movie.
To get to some of my thoughts:
-
I had a hard time with Nick Offerman as President, not because of his performance, but because in the moment i couldn’t quite seperate him from his parks and rec performance (and the overall positive offscreen image i have from him in my mind). That isn’t a fault of the movie and on me, but just an observation
-
Another aspect that took me out of the movie was that in my opinion they weren’t really dressed like i’d expect seasoned war reporter to be dressed (but that might be my mental image being wrong). Towards the start of the movie they still do it. Like in one of the first scenes with the bomb going off they have that bright reflective vest. Or in another scene they do wear this distinctive blue Press helmet. I think she also wears it in some of the flashbacks we get in the early hotel bathtub scene. But most of the time they just seem to walk around casually like civilians with only waving around their tiny press credential badges. Like when they directly approach the armed men at the mass grave. Or in the final act where the other journalist team seems to be in full gear, but they just wear a small vest, no helmet.
-
They also seemed a bit too clean for me for being on the road in a country where normal life has broken down due to the civil war going on. Like always a fresh pair of fresh cloths, washed hair and clean hands etc.
-
I think the action was done extremely well. And watching it in a large (relatively empty) theater the contrast between quiet moments and extremely loud gun shots was great. Not to say that the rest of the movie wasn’t shot well in general.
I think between the high expectations and aspects that kind of took me out of the more realistic image i had in my mind, my initial impression after watching wasn’t as hyped. But having slept over it my opinion of the movie has improved, and might continue to do so.

- Comment on [Discussion thread] Fallout 6 months ago:
I really liked it and it definitely exceeded my expectations. Overall well made, good performances and a solid mix of humor, satire, brutality and so on.
I’m more of an elder scrolls kind of guy, so I haven’t really played the fallout games much (only fallout 3 I think?), so I can’t really compare the series to the games.
Subjectively the one thing I would have changed, is having a bit more mystery. Feels like instead of being that naive vault dweller slowly uncovering everything piece by piece, we do get a lot of information on the background events really fast.

- Comment on Phil Spencer wants Epic Games Store and others on Xbox consoles 7 months ago:
I agree that it is about market powery, but one could make the argument that Xbox/PlayStation have a duopoly similar to iOS/Android.
Although I think PlayStation dominated with roughly a 70/30 split worldwide (higher in Europe). Nintendo is somewhat in its own category imo, since they mostly do their own games and don’t directly compete in that sense.
But I guess in a way consoles also compete with PCs.
- Comment on [Discussion thread] 3 Body Problem - Season 1 7 months ago:
Watched it over the weekend and overall enjoyed it, but wasn’t blown away. However since i really loved the books and am a sci-fi an in general that was to be expected, as long as it didn’t completely botch it. It’s been quite a while since i’ve read the source material, which makes it somewhat hard to properly judge the adaption.
Overall i don’t mind characters and loaction being altered, since i found the general concepts to be the strongest part of the books. So changing most of the main cast to not be chinese unlike in the books didn’t bother me much, since it is a story that happens on a global scale. Outside of course the flashback scenes of Ye Wenjie (which were done quite well imo). However changing the chinese centric cast to a group of british friends that all know eachother seems a bit pointless (outside of making the show easier to market/shoot), since instead of expanding the scale it makes it even more narrow.
I’ve actually started to watch the chinese TV show as comparison and what i like better there is that the science feels more like sciency if that makes sense. For example it’s not the stars that blink, but fluctuation in the cosmic microwave background. Or the nanotechnology scientist is a professor that actually works in a lab that looks convincible, compared to the Auggie Salazar character.
- Comment on Netflix’s ‘3 Body Problem’ Draws Fire in China, Praise From U.S. Conservatives | The Hollywood Reporter 7 months ago:
The scene was also buried halfway through the Chinese version of the novel but was brought to the beginning of the book for the English version — with the author’s blessing.
From the article. So I guess it was less prominent in the original chinese version? But you are right being a book adaption the story has been out for years and quite prominently at that. Then again we don’t really know what “draws fire in china” actually means, if it’s just some random online posters, then you can make any claim and likely find a comment supporting it. Really doesn’t mean much.
On a side note I think there was a Chinese TV adaption already. Has anyone seen that one and how they handled it?
Before reading the article I actually didn’t think about that scene, but thought they’d be annoyed that nationalities of the characters were changed.
- Comment on My small hot take on Dune pt 2 after having just seen it 8 months ago:
Actually thinking about it again we are being told at the very start of the first movie (with a voice over exposition) that spice is the most valuable substance in the universe, that the spacing guild uses it and that without it interstellar travel is impossible. So in a way the viewer gets all the information needed in the first part.
Maybe the fact that irritated me was more that we don’t get to understand that the spacing guild is basically a completely seperate faction and all the dynamics that come with it?
I guess we have to wait how he resolves it in the third movie.
- Comment on My small hot take on Dune pt 2 after having just seen it 8 months ago:
I also thought the lack of any substantial passage of time with the fremens was an issue. As I’ve already written in some other threads i think it is a consequence of wanting to keep Alia an unborn child rather than casting a child actor to play a difficult role (and having that influence who you cast later when you need a more grown up Alia).
Once you make that decision the time frame naturally gets restricted to under 9 months, since you have to I have Jessica pregnant from the beginning.
I very much enjoyed the Geidi Prime aesthetics, but I can see how one can find it to be more style than necessary substance. Now that you mention it, I’d also definitely be interested how it would have looked with a more Alien like Giger-ish design.
Regarding the end with the great houses and spice, I wonder what we will see in part 3. I think the importance of spice fell a bit under the table, since we didn’t have the spacing guild being a bigger part. So I’m wondering if that was simply saved for part 3 to take out a story line from an already relatively packed movie. As were others such as jamis wife/children or paul+chani’s first child Leto that gets killed (also a result of the cut timeframe).
- Comment on Why doesn't the United Kingdom rejoin the European Union? 1 year ago:
Others have already mentioned some of the many reasons why.
But i would like to add that even if they’d rejoin, they could not do so with the same conditions that they had before. Since they joined the predecessors of the EU so early, they had a number of privileges that a new joining member nowadays would not be granted. So from that side “going back to how things were before” wouldn’t be possible to begin with.

- Comment on 'Barbie' dominates cinemas: Movie tops $1 billion globally in first for solo woman director 1 year ago:
For me it depends on what we define as “theater experience”:
I absolutely never care about the rest of the audience (unless they’d be actively annoying). The Part where it forces me to pay attention is the biggest draw. And the technical aspect (better/larger screens) only matters for certain movies ever since i have a decent sized oled tv. So i’d go see Oppenheimer if there were an IMAX cinema in my area (which sadly isnt the case) or i went to see Avatar 2 last christmas, because i think there the technical aspects matter more. There i went to see it on a large screen, whereas otherwise i often choose smaller independent cinemas, whenever i go. Next one is probably gonna be “Past Lives”.
A membership sounds nice, but i feel like i wouldn’t have enough movies i truly want to see to justify one. Also i think the one that’s available in my city that i know of would be 20€/month, but not truly unlimited but 8 tickets/month.
- Comment on 'Barbie' dominates cinemas: Movie tops $1 billion globally in first for solo woman director 1 year ago:
For me it might actually be the other way around. Being in the cinema forces me to pay better attention, which especially for a long movie can be helpful.
Havent gone to see Oppenheimer, but for example when it was released i went to see “Drive my Car” (179 minutes long and subtitled) in the cinema. I’ve since also watched it at home, but i am glad i went to the cinema on my first watch. It’s my own flault, but i am not sure if i would have had the same focus and attention when watching it at home or if i’d at some point would have gotten distracted by something.
