I don’t have calf cramps, but sometimes I’ll be flexing my toes and I’ll feel one start to fire up a cramp, and it’s a fast-paced high-stakes game of Operation, where I keep moving my toe around trying to find the magic relaxation spot, while it sends off more and more alarming pre-cramp warning buzzes. (That may not be a perfect metaphor but I got tired of thinking of board games. I also considered Battleship.)
- Comment on Is this what every election is like? 2 weeks ago:
Yes, it was really crazy. In the past few decades our politicians had different goals, but generally still following the same rules. Trump has shown he wants to dismantle any and all systems that don’t serve him, and the Republican party is happy to let him do so, so this election seems like it might have far greater consequences than the ones in memorable past.
- Comment on Which adjective should come first, modular or versatile? 4 weeks ago:
Neither sounds “wrong” to my ear, but if I had to pick one, hmmmm…I think modular things are inherently versatile, but versatile things aren’t inherently modular, so I would go with “versatile and modular” so it gets more specific from first word to second word.
Or consider not using both those words.
- Comment on Why do some men dis other men who sit to pee? (& follow-up questions) 5 weeks ago:
There will always be insecure men (and people in general) who criticize others over nonsense topics that they’ve convinced themselves is proof they aren’t whatever insecure thing they’re afraid of being.
- Comment on Suddenly firefox on ios shows ads on homescreen 1 month ago:
There was/is a recent lawsuit against Google for paying other browsers to make google the default search engine, and I think it was ruled against Google. And that payment is like 81% of Mozilla’s income. So if they have to stop those payments, Mozilla’s is gonna have to find some other ways to make money or cut back massively on their budget. So while I don’t like ads, if Mozilla has to do this to stay around, I’ll support them. If I got any facts wrong here, someone please correct me.

- Comment on What started “weirdo” as a slur just recently? 2 months ago:
Don’t worry about it too much. I don’t think this current trend will completely overtake the word “weird”, but even if it does, you’ll still be good-weird, Republicans will still be bad-weird, and people will know the difference, no matter what we call those things.
- Comment on Ford Patents In-Car System That Eavesdrops So It Can Play You Ads 2 months ago:
I feel like there might be an emerging market for a car company that makes new, safe cars with very low tech computer systems.
Ah who am I kidding, I wish there was a market for all kinds of functional-but-not-enshittified products out there, but the complete lack of them shows the entrenched powers that be will stomp out any attempt to upset the terrible status quo.

Heck yes, I binged this game over a weekend where I didn’t see many other people and it put me in a weird headspace that was perfect for this game. I really enjoyed it, very unlike anything else I’ve played. If you’re just playing it to beat it, you might not enjoy it, is my guess. But if you’re in the mood to dig in a bit more it’s a lot of fun to learn about the “characters” through the different websites and messages.
I’ve recommended this game to friends and coworkers and I don’t think any of them have gone for it. Ah well. This game will always hold a special little place in my heart.

Truuue, I hadn’t thought of that. Okay, at least it won’t be as bad as I feared.
Now I just have to sell all these vintage printing presses I bought…

It blows my mind when I think about where we might be headed with this tech. We’ve gotten SO used to the ability to communicate instantly with people far away in the technology age, how will we adapt when we have to go back 300 years and can only trust something someone tells us in person. Will we go back to local newspapers? Or can we not even trust that? Will we have public amphitheaters in busy parts of town, where people will around the news? And we can only trust these people, who have a direct chain of acquaintance all the way back to the source of the information? That seems extreme, but I dunno.
I think most likely we won’t implement extreme measures like that, to ensure we’re still getting genuine information. I think most likely we’ll just slip into completely generated false news from every source, no longer have any idea what’s really going on, but be convinced this AI thing was overblown, and have no idea we’re being controlled.

- Comment on is this the right way to establish boundaries with my nosy coworkers at the hospital? 4 months ago:
I can’t image HR getting a complaint that you aren’t making small talk, and saying “That’s outrageous! We’ll demand his medical records right now!”
HR exists to keep the company from getting sued, and I think there’s a lot less risk for them to tell one employee “He doesn’t want to talk to you, deal with it.” vs demanding medical records for a non-work-role related issue.
- Comment on is this the right way to establish boundaries with my nosy coworkers at the hospital? 4 months ago:
You said you were out sick for 4 weeks? Do they know why? Maybe you could spin that, say “sorry, I got some scarring in my throat and talking can make it worse, so I really need to only talk about work or I’ll be up all night in pain”. Or something like that.
Or you could try “sorry, I like working with you, and I know I’ve talked in the past, but I need to admit that I have Asperger’s/autism, and trying to make small talk is very stressful for me, so I hope you’re not offended but I feel like I’m going to burn out unless I make some changes like sticking to only work-oriented discussions from now on. Thank you for your understanding.”
Bonus points if you type that up and hand it to people, like you can’t even tell it to then directly.
I know both my answers are “lie in a way that makes you look abnormal” which you may feel like isn’t something you should have to do. Which is true. But you want to minimize them thinking you’re judging them, and they KNOW you are able to talk, so the best way I see is to make them think it’s a problem you have, not about them.
🤷♂️ Good luck!

I vote starvation. I think a big percent of the world will starve, with a few countries holding out. A bit later I think all those people will starve too, with only like 20 billionaires surviving. And then when THEY run out of food a few years later, I dunno, they’ll OD on drugs?

I’m a Silent Stubber, when I hurt myself I just automatically pause in place and hold my breath for a second until the worst is past. I wonder what makes people react differently to a legit stub. (I didn’t grow up in any kind of traumatic situation where I had to be quiet or anything. I was a pretty loud kid, and am still a loud adult.) 🤷♂️
