Quality of posts will go up too. There’s a direct correlation with (worse) quality and image posts.

In before "silencing people just creates echo chambers!" (ignoring the fact that I silenced nobody)
For those who are thinking this I have a simple question: When was the last time you invited someone that called you a slur out for a beer so you can "better understand their position"?

Interesting! I actually have not subscribed to a ton of stuff yet, but I feel like I’m seeing more than enough per day. The actual comments/threads aren’t super populated necessarily, but frankly, I think that’s a good thing. It’s keeping me from doom scrolling and I’m not getting bogged down in arguments like I used to on Reddit.

I mean we all have our preferences, but I personally don't want to go back to my old habit of spending 2-3 hours a day on reddit and lying to myself about why I did it. I try to cap it at an hour on here a day at most.

there isn’t a while lot of actual content on here.
I mean how many posts/threads do you really need a day? I read 10-15 or so. That's plenty

This comment is almost poetic lol
- Comment on Don't you find it disappointing that people apply Herd Mentality for upvoting top comments, even if it's not the best one out there? 1 year ago:
I guess it worries me less because it's certainly not the norm and users can still "travel freely" while those who only want to be on beehaw now have a default experience slightly more catered to their values. It just doesn't seem to have any major tangible cons.

I’m not sure if I’d like to excuse any way of talking. I like that direct way of talking. They attacked a decision, not any person. I also like to say whatever i want while solving problems, without any complicated social etiquette or putting additional effort in social interactions. Sometimes I’m right, sometimes somebody else tells me I made a bad descision. I can handle that. I just think being blunt, overstepping a bit or being allowed to vent is a healty way of dealing with human emotions. (Within boundaries.)
I'd agree with that except they are doing it as a public-facing "official" statement, which generally should be a bit more "professional" in tone IMO. I would certainly describe it as an attack. At its more charitable it was just incredibly passive aggressive and unnecessary. You can say "we believe this is a mistake" without accusing people of being ignorant.

I understand that but if you're pitching "the admins need to sit down and hash it out" then the fact that one group just proclaimed "not only are they dumb but they don't even know how fediverse works" is incredibly germain the conversation. Being blunt doesn't give someone a pass if they sound condescending/dismissive. They just sound condescending dismissive. Being an "engineer" doesn't excuse one from using basic social etiquette.

In my opinion, the onus of applying critical thinking when reading comments/sources lies with the reader.
Agreed but many simply won't do it, so you can't just build out a system with the ideal situation in mind if it's not occurring. Really the only way to truly make a dent in low effort posts is to go text-only and not allow image/videos.

it’s way better than the alternative though, having no votes at all would encourage spam and low effort posting
Upvotes only, never show the results, never show people their "karma" count. Let the thread reflect the impact.

I forgot to add, when admins of an instance say stuff like "In my opinion, this is an extraordinarily dumb act by the beehaw instance owners. It’s worse for beehaw users than for us, and will likely result in many beehaw users leaving that instance. They said in their post that this is a nuke, but I don’t think they fully assessed the blast area. Based on their post, I don’t think they fully understand what defederation does" in their formal statements, it doesn't exactly feel like an invitation to a conversation that is grounded in mutual respect.

genuine question: are you aware why beehaw made its defederation decisions? It's not always about "conflict"

Sorting by new ends up creating a group that just picks winners and losers for those who don't. Hence "the knights of new" with their disingenuous framing that they were doing a public service. All they were really doing, whether they knew it or not, was picking which snowballs get to roll and which don't.
Most, if not all, have to sort by new or it just trades issues.

I don't understand why people get so angry at other instances for defederating. It's why the option exists. I fully support its usage.
- Comment on What are ways Renters (of a house) can get into alternative energy? 1 year ago:
As much as landlords like to pretend otherwise, they pretty much have all the power when it comes to legislated rights/protections. They just point to the occasional instance of a squatter or someone abusing the system to pretend like they are victims of said system.
Source: am landlord (rent out my old home) and frankly I can do almost whatever I want. I’m before people start shouting at me about rent seeking and all of that, I actually charge probably 20% less than anyone around me and I’m friends with almost all my tenants lol if shit breaks, I fix it. I do not understand why that is so hard for other landlords. But apparently the bar is so low that that makes me exceptional.
