- Comment on What do people claim they know of but really don't? 3 days ago:
I literally wrote a comment about the exact same thing yesterday. Freedom of Speech in the US only means freedom from prosecution for what you said. It does not entitle you to a platform to say it. Social media giants can silence you for literally any reason. You don’t even have to break the rules. That doesn’t infringe on your freedom of speech as that is not what said freedom even means.
In regards to the original question: I’d say it’s a good heuristic to assume that every time someone anywhere makes an absolute claim that leaves no room for them being mistaken is a situation where it’s safe to assume they’re just expressing personal mood about that subject, not an objective truth. Absolute claims only need one counter example to come crashing down.
- Comment on Wouldn't transitioning a male prisoner to female make him/her less violent? 4 days ago:
Potenttially but not everyone is in prison for violent crime and I’m not sure who wants to live in a place where something like that is forced upon people.
- Comment on Why does the microwave button have a "popcorn" button when every microwave popcorn brand says "DO NOT USE THE POPCORN BUTTON"? 1 week ago:
I’ve never cheated on anyone.
Hearing that doesn’t mean much when it comes from someone who just wrote a wall of text declaring how you’re willing to lie when that can prevent you or someone else feeling uncomfortable emotions.
That’s the point: liars can’t be trusted.
- Comment on Why does the microwave button have a "popcorn" button when every microwave popcorn brand says "DO NOT USE THE POPCORN BUTTON"? 1 week ago:
Cheating your partner also doesn’t hurt them for as long as they don’t find out.
Telling white lies indicates that you consider yourself to be a better judge of the other person’s ability to handle uncomfortable information. You’re treating them as emotionally immature person who needs to be sheltered from the real world like a child.
Here’s a simple queston: in what situation would you want to be lied to?

We learn to hit eachother at you young age as well but nobody would use that to justify hitting people once they’re adults.
- Comment on Why does the microwave button have a "popcorn" button when every microwave popcorn brand says "DO NOT USE THE POPCORN BUTTON"? 1 week ago:
I don’t even own a microwave (technically I do but it’s mothballed somewhere in my shed). I just cut the bag open and pour the content into a large cast iron pot with a lid.

This is the house brand from LIDL. Cheaper than the name brand, larger packaging and both contain fat, salt and corn.

I never said I couldn’t find a recipe - the question was: who the fuck doesn’t know how to make french toast?
I don’t.
What a strange thing to so angry about.

I don’t. Not a clue where to even begin.
- Comment on Why do media always specify a car's model in news stories? 1 week ago:
The exact make and model isn’t always strictly relevant. In this particular example it would suffice to just say “large SUV” or similar. Not everyone knows what kind of car a LandCruiser even is.
- Comment on How does one figure out what to do, after getting out and done with high school? 1 week ago:
There’s value in working a job and realizing it is not what you want to do as well. I did that for 10 years before I realized that I want to do something else instead and that I didn’t like having a boss either.

Literally says right there.
…there to be enough working-age people to cover the retirement and medical payments of the ones no longer working.
- Comment on Does anyone actually believe this "rogue AI" nonsense? 2 weeks ago:
It’s what I expected would eventually happend ever since I started thinking about the implications of AI around 10 years ago. I just expected something orders of magnitude worse than this - and still do.
- Comment on [deleted] 3 weeks ago:
that have an AI generated thumbnail and when I’ve viewed some of them there’s been no apparent AI use in the video.
That’s what I’m trying to say here as well.

How is it that every time a comments starts with “So you’re saying…” it’s the followed up with something I did not say.
- Comment on If your city has terrible tap water, how do you fight for better tap water? 3 weeks ago:
My country has the best tap water in the world so luckily I don’t need to even think about that. It’s far cleaner than even bottled water.
- Comment on Fandom won’t allow adblockers 3 weeks ago:
That’s a statement, not an argument.
- Comment on [deleted] 3 weeks ago:
As a heavy YouTube user this simply is not my experience. Not that it never happens, but it’s not the default to the point that you can just assume that. In most cases your assumption is wrong.
Gaming YouTube is probably the clearest example. Everyone has an AI thumbnail and nobody has AI content in the video itself. Same applies to renovation, car mechanic, woodworking, machining, van life etc. Virtually everyone has 100% organic content but with an AI thumbnail.
AI content only starts appearing when you move to videos that used to heavily rely on stock video content or for example videos about history where real footage is not available. I assume it’s also the case often with short-form media but I wouldn’t know as I don’t consume any.
- Comment on Fandom won’t allow adblockers 3 weeks ago:
Someone is still paying for hosting that content. That works for text, pictures and gifs but once you move to videos it starts getting expensive. I too put content on YouTube without any intention to make money from it but I still understand that it costs YouTube money.
I’m all for passion projects but it still needs to be sustainable one way or another.
- Comment on Fandom won’t allow adblockers 3 weeks ago:
As someone who has used AdBlocker for as long as I can remember, I can’t come up with a single reason why sites should allow it. Exact same thing with the YouTube controversy. Of course I don’t like that they’re trying to prevent me from blocking the ads but I sure don’t blame them for it. Using an adblocker doesn’t necessitate for me to come up with justifications for convincing myself that what I’m doing is actually moral because it’s not. I’m perfectly capable of holding both of these two thoughts in my mind at the same time.
My test for whether behaviour is good or not is to consider what the world would be like if everyone did what I do and whether we’d all be better off for it. There one thing is for absolute certain: YouTube would not exist as a free platform. It would either not exist at all or it would be a subscription-based only.
You can have an ad-free service or you can have a free one but you can’t have both and demanding that is ridiculous. Even now, the sole reason you’re able to use Lemmy for free is because someone else is willing to take the financial hit by paying for the instance upkeep. We all just take it for granted.
- Comment on [deleted] 3 weeks ago:
If they’re using ai for the thumbnail… they’re probably using AI elsewhere in the video.
One does not automatically follow from the other. I simply use a screenshot from the video because I don’t care about views but for the people who do care, a good (as in makes people click) thumbnail is extremely important - perhaps eventhe most important. Making a thumbnail like that by hand is not easy, but with the assist from AI it is and most people don’t care. This militant anti-AI activism is by a small and vocal minority group of people. There’s no point in spending hours in Photoshop when AI does it better in 15 minutes and now you have 10 options to choose from.
I don’t like it nor do I usually watch those videos but I surely don’t blame them for doing it. It’s a ruthless game played on YouTube’s terms and this is what it takes if you wish to even get a chance as a small creator.
- Comment on Anthropic asks users to stop being mean to Claude 3 weeks ago:
You’re not trying to remove a moral status but deny it in the first place. That’s different but the end result of it still seems the same.
The psychological drive behind the urge to call something with a deragatory term is the same in both cases.
- Comment on Anthropic asks users to stop being mean to Claude 3 weeks ago:
That is how slurs tend to be used: as a tool to dehumanize something we wish to grant no moral value to.
- Comment on Anthropic asks users to stop being mean to Claude 3 weeks ago:
My hot take is that anyone intentionally being mean to an AI is not a psychologically stable person and similar behaviour can most likely be observed in other parts of their life as well.
This is why “Westworld” would never work. Whether the robots there actually feel anything is beside the point. We’d simply view the people who go there to take pleasure in abusing these human-like machines as the sadistic psychopaths that they are.
- Comment on Anon isn't worried about population decline 3 weeks ago:
I highly doubt that would be anywhere near enough even if the issue was only limited to the country with the highest number of ultra wealthy people which it isn’t.
- Comment on Anon isn't worried about population decline 3 weeks ago:
Worry about population decline isn’t about wanting more people. It’s about wanting there to be enough working-age people to cover the retirement and medical payments of the ones no longer working. We know exactly how many 30-year-olds we’ll have in 20 years and it’s simply not enough. Something has to give and usually the first to go is the benefits for the people who most need them.

Saippuakauppias is the same word either way you read it. It’s finnish and means a soap salesman.
- Comment on How do I tell my co-workers I'm not attending a wedding without creating drama? 3 weeks ago:
You don’t owe anyone an explanation. You can just say that you’re not coming and leave it at that. You can tell them that you have your reasons and you wish not to talk about it but don’t lie. That just makes you the asshole.
- Comment on Would it be a good idea to become a online freelancer? 4 weeks ago:
No need to overthink reversible decisions. You’re not signing up for a platform for life. If it seems bad then you switch, or if it simply doesn’t work out then you go do something else. You’re not dooming the rest of your life here.
You won’t regret trying and failing but you will regret not even giving it a chance.
