Be careful about trusting flash drives. I’ve had several crap the bed. My understanding is the data is still there but the internal controller has fallen over.
I agree with others that say make multiple copies in multiples places on different media types.
- Comment on Why do we assume paper towels are sterile, or at least clean? 3 days ago:
Unless it’s been autoclaved or packaged in a “clean room” I don’t assume anything’s sterile . I would say that mass produced paper products like that are closer to sanitary.
- Comment on My BC is very sound sensitive espicially to the turn signal. My brother and I can't get in a disagreement because he'll run. Are all BC's this way, or did I just find a unique one? Any way to fix it? 1 week ago:
You use too many unnecessary acronyms.

My own experience is that there are “special” classes for the learning impaired. Never heard of any “genius” schools unless it’s fiction
Special classes for "gifted" students within a school is/was common in larger districts. FWIW I never heard anyone in the programs, student or teacher, describe the students as geniuses .

half of My polycule says that magnet schools are all fake
US magnet schools are real, although controlled by the local school district rather than the federal govt. They tend to be organized around subject (STEM, performing arts, etc) rather than cognitive gift per se . One might argue that a pre-law/pre-med magnet could have substantial overlap with cognitive ability.
Services for the cognitively “gifted”, to the degree they exist, tend to be located within a given school. They have a special curriculum, the flipside of one might have for kids who are cognitively challenged.
and only serve the rich. There’s no way a low income white boy
I assure you that isn’t true, both from direct experience and from working in magnets. Rich folks can likely influence any situation but magnet != private school for rich kids.
it doesn’t have any dumb jock types
They typically don’t have competitive sports teams so any jock-ness is individual rather than collective. Kids geographically local to a magnet can often attend automatically so there is a subset of Normals at a magnet, including jocks.
- Comment on how to watch less youtube on my tv? 3 weeks ago:
I find YT a valuable resource for my geeky/tech interests. My approach to avoiding time suck is:
- use RSS rather than browsing to catch new vids from creators I value
- download with yt-dlp
- pull down “talking head” vids as audio-only and add them to the podcast queue instead of video queue
- work around the house wearing headphones for most vids, looking at the screen only when something visually important is happening.
While I’m writing this yt-dlp is pulling down the day’s video queue and storing it on the media server for later consumption.
- Comment on How to deal with people who obtusely miss your point on Lemmy? 3 weeks ago:
I’ll spend time clarifying a point for person who
- seems to be asking/arguing in good faith
- seems to be capable of understanding an answer
When it’s not immediately obvious what kind of commenter is asking I glance at their posting history and annotate the account with a note/tag so I remember.

xtreme defender… can be a good option for weaker calibers like .380,
That’s my use case. I load the 68gr defender over 4.1 grains of Win 231. These chrono 1,181fps out of the LCP’s 2.75” barrel. Feeds flawlessly, which surprised me a bit.
A couple months ago American Reloading had 68gr Defender pulls for 27.6 cents each which is about half price and in the ballpark of top-tier hollowpoints.
- Comment on Traffic cameras have caught a white RAM 1500 pickup truck driving above the speed limit or running red lights more than 547 times since 2022. It belongs to an NYPD cop. 4 months ago:
Only people I’ve seen buy ram trucks are ones who do not care about others and want to be seen as big and tuff.
The brodozer phenomenon is real and lamentable.
At the moment I am getting a reprieve from it. I moved to a small agricultural town* where the pickups are actually work trucks. Hay bales, animal feed bags, and farm dogs in the bed. It makes this grinch’s heart grow a little larger.
