- Comment on They eliminated cashiers and keep the profits. NY Democrats are fighting back. 2 weeks ago:
I fully support capped CEO pay.
I fully think large grocery chains are screwing customers.
But having worked at a few smaller grocery stores, the margins are absurdly thin. At one 6ish store semi-local store I worked for we made roughly 3 cents on the dollar. That included various fees and labor, but once you factor in theft and chargebacks and bounced checks and such - it could get even thinner some months.
Granted, I assume the megacorp ones maybe negotiate / strongarm for higher margins? So fuck 'em.

Definitely not a fake company, have made a dent in the administrative side of healthcare spaces, but #3 seems plausible.
Another place I worked would do it semi-related to #1 with regards to sponsoring visas - but I never asked too many questions, just in case.

I worked for a company where I sometimes tried to refer people to positions posted on our website, only to learn from HR that they weren’t real positions and they were posted to meet some legal requirements I wasn’t given details about.
That same company burned 12 internal employees’ time across 350+ applicants and a countless sea of interviews over a 6 month period. We arrived at consensus. Stated who we’d like to hire and were told the req had been closed the day prior. Was it ever real? We’ll never know. Did we waste well into the six figures of people’s time and energy? 100%.
Same company a few months after laid off entire departments, sunset numerous product lines with paying customers, and last I heard the current owners are just keeping it in hobble along maintenance mode and extracting profits before it crashes. Dumpster fire.

- Comment on What's gunna to happen when the American Federal Government starts prosecuting people for owning powerful computer hardware and software? 1 month ago:
Nah, Americans’ are weak. Too busy with social media and shit to do anything. I’ve been trying to recruit people for violent reformation for months now and nobody is interested. Everyone either thinks the next election will fix things or are too afraid to take action.

I agree. I purposely applied magnets to floppies and like…maybe 9/10 had issues but generally it was a non-issue.
Now…filling a floppy disk with shaved off match head dust…

It should absolutely worry you, all of it, not sure what your problem is, but wasting my time fighting you is what they want, so I am bowing out.

The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer, and whether you participate in it or not will not change that. That all of us will continue to not even have the opportunity to play on a level playing field should concern you. I don’t give a shit about your opinion on AI in general; this is still a problem for us.

Part of me thinks this is why memory prices are being held high. Even if supply increases I doubt we’ll see significant reductions in price.
Frontier AI models will only be accessible by the rich and powerful (government and corpos). Distilled frontier models for local use may exist but will be arbitrarily out of reach for most due to hardware availability or pricing.
This is all by design.

Hero? From the stance of exposing things that should have been public knowledge, absolutely.
- Comment on I swear it won't hurt you if you use it for like a second 1 month ago:
I try 3-5 distros every 3-4 months and always end back up on a debloated heavily modified windows.
I don’t like windows, don’t get me wrong. But between driver issues, app issues, some utilities I can’t seem to find a replacement for, and a suboptimal shared remote access approach - I really can’t make things work well enough to not degrade my day to day work productivity.
That said, I do run Linux distros for very specific things at work or my homelab just fine…I just can’t seem to figure out a way to run it as my dedicated personal and/or work machine without making heavy concessions.

I want to leave.
- Comment on Shutting down a piracy site 2 months ago:
I think it just depends what you’re after maybe. It’s rare I can’t find something, even older things - but if it does happen I have a friend who can grab it for me.
Otherwise, I have both a US and UK subscription as well as access to a 10+ year running private indexer so I rarely have issues with finding things or retention - I can use fully encrypted connections and I can cap my 5gbit fiber line.

Depends on what it is, I have hired people with past convictions before, though.
Like, trespassing? Okay whatever.
Shoplifting 15 years ago? Okay whatever.
Embezzling money a couple years ago and you’re going to be a cashier? Yeah, no.
- Comment on Why would anyone doordash food from a place that already does delivery? 3 months ago:
Fuck DD as a company, but…
Usually if I use DD it’s via company benefits so I don’t even have to pay for it - that’s one reason.
Some places near me only let you order deliver by phone and I have to call like 10 times to get through because it’s busy.
Some places near me just schluff delivery off to DD anyway, so I might as well use DD to begin with.
As others have said, some places also won’t deliver to me. I’m about 5 minutes outside of city limits so a lot of in-house delivery places refuse to deliver to me even if I offer extra money (I’ve tried). DD doesn’t seem to care about that extra distance.
Related, Dominoes won’t deliver to me, but they will deliver across the street from me to a parking lot if I place a pin. It is more dangerous for their driver to go there and have to take an unprotected left back to the store versus a right from where I live, but 🤷♂️
