- Comment on What's the best way to tell a kid that their dog died? 3 weeks ago:
Don’t lie. You owe them the truth and it’s a learning opportunity for them to grow emotionally before having to deal with a human death. Emotional Intelligence is just as important as being able to read.
Analogies can help but don’t hide behind them. Greive together. Have a gesture, no matter how simple that encourages closure. Perhaps go through photos of the pet with them and ask which should be framed or printed or put on the fridge or something like that.
Talk to them about the emotions you are having, how those emotions feel and allow them to also have emotions, especially in the coming weeks when they miss them. But you don’t have to lie about what you are feeling or make a huge deal about. Don’t rush to fill the void too quickly. Comfort, yes, perhaps a new pet in due time. But not immediately as that cheapens the connection from being with an individual to being a role.
It sounds cruel for me to say I hope your kid has to endure many human deaths in their life but the alternative is either for them to have far too short of a life or for then to become unattached.
And I hope they will also be there for their friends when their friends have to deal with a loss. Kids model behaviour more then they do as they are taught, so it’s an opportunity to model that kind of behavior and emotional support.
- Comment on Which countries combine high quality of life and strong equality? 5 months ago:
New Zealand has good QoL but does have issues with inequality with the Maori (original Polynesian settlers). They are strict about immigration which tries to help reduce immigrant inequality. Australia has better economic QoL, but there is no wildlife in NZ that will kill you.

When I managed our compost as a kid growing up, we composted the stickers and they would break down faster then egg shells or cofee grounds. But that was 20 years ago and in the US.
- Comment on Sliced off the tip of my thumb, what are some good one handed games? 5 months ago:
Just about anything that is turn based. Board games ports, Roguelike games like Balatro, Slay the Spire, 9 Kings. Civilization games and Civ-likes. You can even play ttrpg ports like Baldur’s Gate and Divinity but it might be a little annoying without an RPG mouse. I played a lot of Civ when my left arm was paralyzed then weirdly Wii tennis after surgery.

Empathy exists in humans on a spectrum. Different people have different priorities. Accepting these 2 truths explains a lot of human behavior and history.

As an American in NZ I did not expect any trick or treaters this year as we didn’t have any last year. But we got a few dozen Indian kids.

At my uni they’d take the highest grade of the class and reset that as the max points and grade from there.
So if max points on an exam was 120 and no-one scored higher then an 85, then an 85 would be an A, 75 a B, etc.
I’m a mediocre student but an amazing test taker and used to compete on math teams. So some of the math heavy engineering courses I would get perfect exam scores and sometimes the prof would ignore me as the highest grade. I was frustrated at first because my A didn’t mean the same as someone’s but I realized later it was to stop me from getting beat up by a bunch of 30 yo guys.

Factorio never goes on sale, but Shapez and shapez 2 are on sale and they are in the same genre but more beginner friendly.

When I moved from the US to NZ I got way superior service then I’d ever had in the US and attempted tipping a “por boir” but they refused it and said if I really felt like giving extra they had a charity I could give to.
Unfortunately I have started seeing tips being asked for by POS in Sydney and Auckland and it made me mad and sad.

I have a bit of an exhibitionist kink. If I thought I could make more money then I currently do, I totally would.

We would have also gotten smart ass comments had they said “you don’t need and internet connection”
The news is you can play offline.

Most (free) software you can download an installer to a file then copy that file onto another machine. Which means being able to install without an Internet connection. I work with a bunch of expensive software, and while this is still true, if you are offline you have to fetch an activation code. I have discs for several assassin’s creed. I don’t remember if they needed Internet access to activate or not…
