- Comment on Xiaomi says it is cooperating with a Chinese police probe into a fatal crash by a car using its autonomous features; its stock is down 10%+ over the past week. 1 day ago:
Wow. Can you imagine what would happen if an American car company’s fully automated driving were responsible for the death of three teenagers in a fiery crash in Nevada?
I can only assume there’d be a full recall, the CEO would go on TV to apologize and resign.
But not everyone can be a beacon of freedom.

That seems like far too little rain to do much farming without totally draining local aquifers.

Rewild it with native flora, do yurts and whatever to attract people to live in a sustainable way with community gardening. Activities can initially revolve around returning the land to a more natural state. As things mature people will invest in the community themselves, creating their own activities etc.
- Comment on Why can humans seemingly only imagine like 3 different forms of government in different flavors? 2 weeks ago:
Yeah… The spectrum of options arrayed before us appear to be heavily weighted towards enforcing arbitrary hierarchies which is… Not ideal.
- Comment on Why can humans seemingly only imagine like 3 different forms of government in different flavors? 2 weeks ago:
I think whether we like it or not economic systems have forced their way into our political systems.
And anyone with any existing power is strongly incentivized to kill any “new ideas” in the womb. As they would most likely represent a departure from the current system that they benefit from.
Any dramatic restructuring is going to be a very “significant” event. We may currently be on the precipice of one such event in the United States, this remains to be seen. The existing power structures have been significantly destabilized and pre-existing norms and rules are being outright ignored.
Power will shift, it remains to be seen how much and to where.
In any case, we may have the opportunity for you to see some new interesting governmental concepts, or perhaps a return to some classics, or a mix of the two (a little overtly capitalist fuedalism perhaps?).
We sure do live in interesting times.
- Comment on How much of a risk is it for naturalized US Citizens (or those with Derivative Citizenship) to protest against the US government, compared to natural-born US Citizens? 2 weeks ago:
One important thing for people to think about right now is “what happens when other countries don’t accept deportees?”
They start to stack up. Housing, feeding, and guarding “dangerous undesirables” is expensive.
Surely, it would be patriotic to save your country money…
It might be too late. It might not, who’s to say. Videos from this weekend have a very familiar ring to them though.

I’ve got one and they’re safe enough to visit any shipwreck.
I took mine to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
Only wusses don’t hop on and immediately go as deep as possible.

Well eliminating a self selecting group of disproportionately high performers certainly won’t hurt them long term.
- Comment on If you can find the oil filter, I'll give you a quarter. If you can get it out after the lube tech tightened it to 325 lbft, I'll give you sixty bucks. 1 month ago:
I feel you, but the reality is probably more like “Project Manager said I need to save 13 more cents on materials or he’ll murder my children, so if I move the oil filter from this nice easy to access location and remove the lip that catches any drippage it’ll get us there.”
90% of the time it’s the bosses.
- Comment on What is the limiting factor than prevents software discovery of undocumented hardware registers and instructions? 2 months ago:
Even for debugging jtag is quite active. It can essentially (depending on the soc or micro you’re working with) override the device and force it into specific conditions or change register values.
Very useful.

This is how we end up in software my friend.
All the senior HW engineers I’ve interacted with almost cried when I told them I’d read the data sheets and schematics before asking them about some register values that needed to be set on boot.
Love those guys.

- Comment on Most of the trick-or-treaters have been skipping my house, and I finally figured out why 4 months ago:
We’re semi-rural (multi acre lots often with houses set almost at the back of lots), this was my first Halloween out here, I was following the kids with a car cause it was cold and snowy. But apparently the other parents in the neighborhood all hang out and set up a flatbed trailer with a fire pit, lawn chairs, and beer just being hauled around by a UTV. I need to learn how to make friends as an adult.

Doesn’t even have to be actual booze. Apple cider vinegar + a drop of dawn dish soap works a treat.

Travel agent saved my ass about 10 years ago when my connecting flight was delayed in air while I was on it. Middle of the night and she helped me switch everything over and rent a car to drive the rest of the way and even got me upgraded to a more fun one. This was when I was going to a job interview and flying in the night before.
- Comment on Anon recommends a cast iron pan 5 months ago:
I didn’t even always add oil afterwards. I just wash it then stick it on the stove on low to dry it while I unload and reload the dishwasher or whatever.
My wife does hate that I’m fine with my cast iron living in the stove though.

TigerDirect eventually acquired the rights for the Circuit City name, years after the stores closed. They were great for awhile, it was just weird that they tried to revive the brand.
I bought my first PC parts at CompUSA, which… I don’t think I’ve seen for a very long time lol. Definitely used TigerDirect when I was in college though.

- Comment on Aldi announces wage increases up to $23 an hour; hiring thousands of employees 6 months ago:
We have both Aldi here but they’re differently named. One is just Aldi, the other is Trader Joe’s.
It’s our super low cost grocer, that has in recent years become more high quality. When I was a kid (80s-90s) it was like “never buy fresh anything there because it’s all crap” but these days it’s all pretty decent quality stuff. Not like farmstand good, but better than Walmart.
- Comment on What are they hiding? 6 months ago:
Clearly witchcraft. Spells to make the kids gay. Definitely not a decorative method of adding texture.
